"Self Portrait in Blue Bathroom" is the third episode of season four of Mayans MC, a spinoff of the FX original series Sons of Anarchy, and the series' thirty-third episode overall.

Synopsis[]

In order for Santo Padre to get back in the drug trade, EZ must carry out a favor.

Plot[]

El Banquero, leader of the LNG, is seen questioning two men. Both are accused of stealing, Banquero rambles to the pair for a short while before realising he is late. One ends up with a bullet to the head; the other ends up with a raise for demonstrating his loyalty to the cartel leader.

EZ returns from his workout to see that Sally, his new dog has ruined his trailer and has eaten most of his very few belongings.

Already seeming to have had enough of his new friend, he attempts to bring her back to the shelter. He arrives at the shelter just as another family’s surrendering an elderly dog. EZ listens as Sofía, the shelter employee he spoke with when he adopted Sally, attempts to talk the family out of leaving their pet at an over-capacity kill shelter. After her boss asks her to step away from the family, EZ approaches Sofía and says there’s something wrong with Sally. Sofía has the patience of a saint when it comes to animals and explains Sally tore up his trailer because she’s anxious. She needs to adjust after having her previous life ripped out from under her. Sofía asks EZ to not give up on Sally and to be patient. EZ changes his mind – at least for now – and thanks Sofía for her help. She replies, “Good luck with that one,” and he thanks her again. She corrects EZ; she was talking to the dog, not him.

We return to Emily, and find her boarding a bus.

EZ and Sally return home to find a friend from prison, Jay-Jay, waiting on their doorstep. (Jay-Jay’s the one who wrote the note Felipe delivered in episode two.) They down a few beers as they catch up on life, and Jay-Jay hints that people think EZ must have cut a deal with the Feds in exchange for early parole. EZ asks what people are saying and offers to show Jay-Jay his release paperwork. Jay-Jay backs off a bit and explains he’s just trying to reconnect.

Angel arrives at the clubhouse and offers to lend Coco a hand, he is still on probation. Coco states be doesn’t want his help now, but he could have really used it when his life was falling apart. Angel didn’t reach out then and Coco’s holding it against him. “I was hurting but you didn’t give a fuck, right?!” says Coco. Angel gets defensive and asks what he was supposed to do. Coco’s reply: “Not be a selfish fuck!”

Moments later, Canche and the rest of the Yuma Mayans arrive, Santo Padre stares them down.

We’re let into the inner workings of LNG via a conversation between Banquero and his sister, Soledad. He explains he’s brought in a lot of Galindo’s people and needs to confirm their loyalty. Due to a lot of time being taken up with this, he is unable to visit their dying mother. He also explains he’s decided to bring their accountant, Randall, across the border to Mexico since he’s under indictment in the U.S. Soledad thinks Randall’s a liability because he knows every single aspect of their business. And although she told Banquero to bring in someone under Randall, he never did. That means Randall is the only person who knows all the details on their offshore accounts. Banquero assures Soledad that he will order the Mayans to handle Randall’s move to Mexico.

The charters head in to Templo and Canche presents Banquero’s request for the Mayans to move Randall, suggesting Santo Padre handle it since they complained they’ve been sidelined. Hank thinks it’s too risky, but Canche points out it’s a high reward job. However, if Santo Padre can’t handle it...

Taza points out that since Randall’s been indicted the Feds will be watching the border. There is a general sense of dislike from Santo Padre towards the job request.

EZ volunteers to handle the move and shocks Angel by volunteering him, too. EZ thinks they can move Randall via tribal land, and Manny throws in with the siblings. Manny knows the perfect place to make the trek across the border. Angel doesn’t remember volunteering but when Alvarez asks if they can pull it off, Manny and EZ simultaneously answer yes. EZ seems to be on the same page as Manny about how to work the move and Bishop laughs in disgust at their partnership. Bishop begins to insult Manny and EZ. Canche’s cool and controlled, but irritated when he points out to Alvarez that Bishop is disruptive. Bishop doesn’t back down and continues to hurl abuse at anyone that dare speak.

Alvarez and Bishop go at it. Bishop’s pissed Marcus has the charter bowing down to Banquero and Canche. Bishop calls Alvarez a pimp and likens Santo Padre to a whore. Alvarez, finally done with Bishop's disrespect, demands Bishop’s flash. The tension is thick in the air as Bishop cuts off his Vice Presidente flash, moments later, Taza cuts his own off in an act of solidarity with the man who wants nothing to do with him. Alvarez tosses the Vice Presidente flash to EZ. EZ stares at Angel in shock as Alvarez declares, “The future of this club starts today.”

Finally seeing some signs of life from Luisa, we see that she is sleeping rough, in a stolen vehicle. We later see her cleaning herself up in a gas station bathroom.

After Emily's long bus ride, we see her finally arrive at the home of Erin, her sister, who is looking after Cristobal.

Hank stares sadly at the kutte of Steve. He has modified it to have a memorial patch across the back, in memory of his former Prospect and friend. Hank later brings the kutte to the family of Steve but finds it hard to find words, Steve's family are devastated.

The Presidente's are back in Templo as they all attempt to get Alvarez to see the light regarding Santo Padre, and disband their charter. Alvarez refuses to back down, he believes EZ and Manny are the future of the club, and he has complete faith they can pull off moving Randall safely to Mexico. He appears to bet Santo Padre’s continued existence on it.

At the bar, Bishop continues to fight with anyone he can, Taza attempts to make peace yet again, affirming to Bishop how wrong it was for Alvarez to take his flash. Bishop isn't interested and tells Taza “I don’t need pity from a fucking f*****”.

Hard times have fallen a few familiar faces after the collapse of the Galindo Cartel, including Nestor, who is now working as a security guard for a complex. He spends his days chasing hooligans out of the car park and his current biggest nemesis, a bunch of punks continuously return to cause havoc. Nestor is eventually able to get the group to leave after threatening to call the cops; he faces a tirade of abuse as they leave.

Luisa is seemingly on a mission, she is tailing a man home from work.

Bishop death stares EZ on his way out of the clubhouse, as he sees him sewing his Vice Presidente flash on to his kutte. Angel reminds EZ that he could get one of the girl's to do it for him. EZ tries to vent a little to Angel about how he is glad of the responsibility from Alvarez but isn't too happy about how it was handed to him. Angel, hilariously cuts EZ off to ask if he thinks that he is selfish, EZ's smirk tells all, but he still assures his brother that he doesn't think he is. Angel then inquires about Jay-Jay visiting earlier and wonders if he knows about EZ's DEA deal. EZ says he will have to try and find out what his game is.

Manny steps outside to congratulate EZ and EZ appears gracious. An SUV arrives and the trio realise that the odd man is Randall, the LNG accountant. EZ tells Randall that he will have to leave his luggage and travel with no baggage to which Randall eventually agrees. He further stuns the Mayans by revealing that he has a young boy with him, Noah, and he is definitely not negotiable. Manny tries to reason with Randall as Canche steps outside. Canche silences the group and tells Randall that it won't be a problem, the boy can come.

Emily and Erin chit-chat. Erin jokes that Cristobal has had such a privileged life that he won't even eat mac and cheese and has to have organic food. Erin then asks how long this arrangement will continue. Emily needs to keep this up until she’s sure Miguel won’t find them. Erin thinks they’ve been incredibly careful and Miguel will never locate them, but Emily knows first-hand what Miguel’s capable of. The following morning Emily prepares to leave and confirms she’ll be back in a week. However, she makes Erin run through a list of emergency procedures in case she doesn’t return. Erin has it down pat and knows exactly how to travel, where to pick up their secret stash of money, and where to hole up.

Later that night, the Mayans and Randall and Noah are bundled in to the back of Creeper's van as he drives the group to the edge of the desert to begin their trek.

While Angel’s on the move, Nails is at home attempting to put together a crib. Felipe stops by with a blanket Marisol made Angel when he was a boy. Felipe’s doing his best to connect with his sons and sticks around for coffee and to help build the crib, despite Nails' protests.

It’s pitch black as the guys make their way through the desert. Randall’s out of shape and wants to take another break, but EZ, Manny, and Angel want to get through the mountains before the sun comes up. Suddenly the guys hear gunshots and Angel wants to get moving, but Manny thinks they should lay low for a while until whoever it is leaves the area. EZ agrees with Manny and they look for a temporary hiding place.

During their downtime Manny discusses fatherhood with Angel. Manny confesses he didn’t become a man until he became a father and admits that if he lost his daughter, he couldn’t go on. Manny explains to Angel and EZ that he heard that Alvarez allowed a Reaper to kill his son after a deal went sideways. “If anybody put his hands on my family, he wouldn’t be out in the world just walking around,” says Manny. Manny thinks Angel will be a good dad and suggests the trick to raising a kid is to just fuck them up less than his parents fucked him up. EZ says giving Angel sage advice is his thing and Manny laughs. Angel thinks they’re both annoying. “It’s like having boy scout in stereo.” And speaking of boy scouts…both Manny and EZ were in the scouts and even remember the oath which they recite while Angel calls them nerds.

The episode takes a brief break from the non-action in the desert to reveal Marcus riding up to the guard shack where Nestor’s watching soccer. Emily makes it back to her temporary apartment and crashes for the night after cleaning up. Steve’s mom tries to scrub the blood from her son’s jacket. Adelita pulls up to the man she’s been stalking’s house seconds after he goes inside.

The guys have fallen asleep waiting for it to be safe to continue their trek to safety. Angel wakes and is using a flashlight to make his way around when he hears talking. He walks toward the voices and finds Randall abusing Noah whilst he begs him to stop. Angel says, “What the fuck?” and then shoots Randall in the chest. Noah cries as Manny and EZ race up to see what happened. Manny rushes to Randall’s side as he chokes on blood and appears seconds from death. EZ screams, “Angel, what the fuck did you do?! What the fuck did you do?!”.

Templo Meetings[]

Canche: I heard you guys were bitching about wanting something to do, so, here it is.
Hank: Not a good idea. It's too high-risk.
Canche: But high reward. El Banquero needs us. If we pull this off, we'll be fully in bed with him. But if Santo Padre doesn't think they can do it...
Gilly: What's this dude wanted for?
Otero: Some white guy, white-collar bullshit. It ain't our problem.
Taza: If this guy's been indicted, feds will have eyes up and down the border, especially since he's connected with El Banquero.
Creeper: Sounds fucking impossible.
EZ: I can do it. Me and Angel. We take him over on tribal land. Feds can't step foot there.
Manny: Can take him over in Arizona. Tohon O'odham territory. I used to ride ATVs out there when I was a kid. It's desolate as fuck, but won't be any feds holed up. I'll go with the Reyes brothers.
Angel: Hey, I don't remember volunteering for this.
Alvarez: You guys think you can pull this off?
Manny and EZ: I do.
EZ: If Manny knows the area, doesn't sound like there'll be an issue. We'll just have El Banquero's people meet us in...
Manny: Near Sonoyta. We can pinpoint a kilometre marking on highway 2.
Alvarez: Good. Okay, we got this.
Bishop: (laughs)
Alvarez: You got something to say, primo?
Bishop: Fucking Bobbsey Twins. You gonna go sing kumbaya, suck each other off out in the desert? (chuckles)
Canche: This is exactly what I'm talking about, Marcus. Your cousin continues to disrupt the healing process.
Bishop: (laughs) Fuck the healing process, and fuck you!
Alvarez: Hey. There's no need for that. We're one club. One club. If you got an issue with that, you got an issue with me.
Bishop: I do got got an issue with you primo. What happened to the great (pounds chest) El Padrino? Slumming, hustling for Galindo, and now you got us out here shuffling and grinning for El Banquero and this motherfucker (points at Canche). (scoffs) You ain't a motherfucking leader. You're a goddamn pimp. And Santo Padre, is always the one getting fucked.
Alvarez: (takes out and throws knife on the table to Bishop) Your flash.
Bishop: (cuts off Vice Presidente flash)
Taza: (cuts off Vice Presidente flash) I stand with my Presidente.
Alvarez: Anybody else got an issue with my leadership?
Alvarez: (picks up flash and throws to EZ)
Alvarez: The future of this club starts today (bangs gavel)

(not technically a Templo meeting)

Canche: You're blind Marcus. Blinded by blood, blinded by the past. Santo Padre-
Dondo: Has got to fucking go. It's more trouble than it's worth.
Canche: You're little experiment down here is not working. You know what you mean to the club. But we wouldn't be here without you. But this chapter is dragging you and your legacy down.
Alvarez: This kid EZ and your guy Manny. That's the future. What I've seen with them, what we saw today, gives me hope. I'm not ready to give up on this charter.
Rooster: Well, the rest of this club is.
Alvarez: We need to do this for El Banquero, que no? To secure the relationship and secure our new pipeline.
Canche: We do, badly.
Alvarez: Well, let's see how tonight goes, if they can pull it off... My money's on that they do.
