Season 2 |
"Patch Over" is the fourth episode of the first season of the FX original series Sons of Anarchy, and the series' fourth episode overall.
Synopsis[]
SAMCRO travel to Nevada to store their firearms with a fellow MC. Meanwhile the Mayans pose to be another threat.
Plot[]
Tig reports that ATF Agent Kohn is now in Charming, therefore putting SAMCRO's stash of guns under threat of being found, as they are forced to store them in the clubhouse after the destruction of the warehouse. The Mayans also pose a threat after the Sons killed three of their members in San Leandro. Jax suggests stashing the guns with The Devil's Tribe, a brother club in Indian Hills, Nevada.
At Teller-Morrow Automotive, Tara brings her father's Cutlass in for a repair, hoping that Jax specifically could take a look at it and give her a ride home since she would have to leave the car for inspection. Jax informs her that although he is about to leave for a few days, Gemma could give her a ride home while others at Teller-Morrow inspect the car. Elsewhere on the lot, Half-Sack tells Tig that Gemma is giving him "a serious MILF chubby." Unknown to him, however, Clay is in earshot.
Jax and Bobby ride out to the Devil's Tribe clubhouse to inform them of the arrangement. However, Nevada is Mayans territory and the pair come across a group of them on the road. Initially, they are chased and shot at but they perform a maneuver which allows them to get behind the Mayans, and they then become the assailants. The Mayans flee, and Jax and Bobby phone Clay on a pre-pay phone at a gas station to tell him that they have been spotted on Mayan turf. Clay then says that they have no option but to patch over The Devil's Tribe (officially make the Nevada club a Sons of Anarchy charter rather than their own, separate club) in order to bolster their presence in Nevada. He also says that he will come out to Nevada that night to perform the ceremony. After finishing this phone call with Clay, Jax comes out to find a guy sitting on his bike. The man is being extremely disrespectful to his girlfriend, Susie, asking her to take a picture of him on the Harley. Jax also notes that she has a busted lip, which the man takes credit for doing to her. Jax punches him in the face and lets him know "Never sit on another man's bike, asshole." Jax brings Susie along with him to The Devil's Tribe. Nearby, Agent Kohn can be seen observing and taking pictures of Jax and Bobby at the gas station.
When Jax and Bobby arrive at the Devil's Tribe clubhouse in Indian Hills, Jax informs Jury, the club President and an old friend of Jax's father, that the Sons need their help storing their AK-47's somewhere other than the garage at Teller-Morrow. Jury offers him the basement of a strip club on US Route 95 that The Devil's Tribe owns, which Jax accepts. Jury asks how they will handle the Mayan issues facing The Tribe, and Jax informs him that Clay is riding up and intends to patch over his club. At first, Jury is not pleased but he eventually accepts that it is the best decision as The Devil's Tribe are only a small club and are frequently bothered by the Mayans, which an SOA presence could deter more.
Outside of The Devil's Tribe clubhouse, Jax confides in Bobby that he doesn't feel right about patching over The Devil's Tribe and believes that Clay is making a mistake. Bobby responds by asking if Jax is all right, noting that Jax has been through a lot in the last few weeks with the issues surrounding Wendy and Abel. Jax questions this, encouraging Bobby that if he has something to say then he should just say it. Bobby points out that Jax has been second-guessing Clay ever since Abel was born, and that the rest of the Club is noticing, before urging Jax to repair that situation. Clay arrives that night, along with a large group of SOA Washington for protection. Clay announces to The Devil's Tribe and Sons of Anarchy members in attendance that they will be patching them over as the Indian Hills, Nevada charter of Sons of Anarchy before leaving them to discuss the matter in private.
At Unser Trucking, Tig and Juice have been tasked with stealing a truck for SAMCRO to use to transport the club's AK-47's to the new storage location in Nevada. As they wait for the drugs to take effect on the guard dog, they lament the fact that they are missing the patch over party in Indian Hills. As they make their way to the truck, however, the dog becomes extremely violent and bites Tig. Juice says that the dog should be dead, as he dosed the meat with nearly two grams of crank. Tig asks if he is stupid, and Juice asks if he should shoot the dog before they go about stealing the truck.
After some time spent discussing the proposal in private, a small group of bikers leave the club and throw down their colors, obviously disagreeing with the patch over. Jury and his Vice-President, Needles, along with several other members of The Devil's Tribe agree to be patched over. A large party then ensues, during which Half-Sack falls for a local girl named Cherry and Bobby has sex with a woman. As revenge for Half-Sack's earlier comment about Gemma, Clay has sex with Cherry, who cannot refuse as she is a club "sweetbutt." Jax also has sex with Susie, which Kohn photographs through a window from his car. The next morning, Tig and Juice arrive with the guns. Tig is disappointed to have missed the party but, knowing of his extreme fondness of women, Clay sets him up for sex with three women.
Back in Charming, Gemma drives the Cutlass back to Tara's house and comes inside, seemingly with the intent of checking on Tara. However, she also points out that she is there to prevent her from causing any damage to Jax's life. In Gemma's words: "Jax is in a real strange place. He doesn't need any outside voices in his head. Stay clear of him." Before leaving, she also gives Tara one of her own handguns without any serial numbers for her protection. Later on, she discovers from Luann Delaney that Tara had a restraining order filed back in Chicago a few months ago, but the name of the person in the report was omitted.
Back at Indian Hills, Jax returns from a solo ride to read his father's manuscript and discovers a group of Mayans parked at a location nearby. Jax calls Clay to inform him of the situation before kicking over the Mayans' bikes and rushing to the Indian Hills SOA clubhouse. The Mayans trail Jax back to the building, where the rest of SAMCRO are preparing with their weapons. A shootout then ensues between the two M.C.'s, with at least one unidentified Sons of Anarchy member, one unidentified Mayan member, and Jury being injured. After the shootout, Jax, Clay, and Jury discuss the events of the day. Jax apologizes to Jury for everything that transpired, and Clay forcefully asks Jax to explain what happened with the Mayans. Shortly after, Bobby tells Clay that he doesn't have anything to worry about regarding Jax, "not yet." Jax asks to ride back to Charming so that he can see Abel, and Susie is seen leaving with the man that she was originally with at the gas station where Jax picked her up.
At St. Thomas Hospital, Jax visits Abel along with Gemma. While looking at them from outside of the room's window, Tara receives an envelope from Kohn containing photographs of Jax and Susie having sex labeled "2:23 AM, LAST NIGHT."

Notable Quotes[]
John Teller: First time I read Emma Goldman wasn't in a book. I was sixteen, hiking near the Nevada border. The quote was painted on a wall in red. When I saw those words it was like someone ripped them from the inside of my head.
Jax: Anarchism stands for liberation of the human mind from the dominion of religion; the liberation of the human body from the dominion of property; liberation from shackles and restraint of government. It stands for social order based on the free grouping of individuals.
John Teller: The concept was pure, simple, true, it inspired me, lit a rebellious fire, but ultimately I learned the lesson that Goldman, Proudhon and the others learned. That true freedom requires sacrifice and pain. Most human beings only think they want freedom. In truth they yearn for the bondage of social order, rigid laws, materialism, the only freedom man really wants, is the freedom to become comfortable.
(After Tig was bitten by the dog)
Tig: I thought you said you drugged the meat?
Juice: I did.
Tig: Fu*k, there was foam in its mouth.
Juice: That thing should be dead. I dosed it like two grams.
Tig: Grams of what?
Juice: Crank.
Tig: You fed crystal to a killer Doberman, man? Are you retarded?
Juice: No.
Juice: I am not happy about being here either. At least you and I, you know-we can try to have a decent conversation.
Tig: What? What do you want? You want to bond? You want to get closer? Fine.
(Tig undoes his belt.)
Juice: What are you doing?
Tig: I'm gonna dunk my balls in your mouth. You're gonna gag. I'm gonna laugh. We'll be best friends forever.
Church Meetings[]
Clay: We've taken every precaution to stay out of ATF's crosshairs. No busts, no investigations for 5 years. We don't know this guy's here for us.
Jax: Hale flagged Bluebird as our gun warehouse. He's pissed off we made Unser crush the case, and he called in the feds. I think it's gotta be about us.
Bobby: Be my guess.
Tig: And we got a garage full of 25 to life.
Clay: Any legit place we store those guns is a straight line back to us.
Bobby: Can't Rosen get us some storage short term?
Clay: He's killing Bluebird, man. He's setting up a dummy corp, it takes a few weeks.
Jax: We got that call from Jury last week. Mayans pressing the Devil's Tribe to pay a vig to keep running book and pussy out of Nevada. Look, maybe I do head to Indian Hills, offer Jury some advice, he offers our AKs a safe house.
Juice: No. No, that's a risky ride, brother. Northern Nevada is Mayan territory. They're still looking to settle the score from our little raid.
Bobby: The Mayans know that the Tribe's a brother club. Part of asking for that vig is about shitting on us. They knew Jury would call. They're gonna be watching.
Jax: That's what I'm saying. That's why just me and you go, under the radar. We'll bring the guns in the same way.
Clay: And you think you could bring Jury on board?
Jax: Shit. My dad saved his ass in Tây Ninh. He owes the Tellers a chit. Look man, we're not gonna go cowboy. I promise.
Bobby: Promise.
Clay: Low profile. I don't want no wetbacks knowing we crossed into NV. (looks at Tig) They pull this off, I want you and Juice driving the barrels.
Tig: Done. We'll need something big though.
Clay: I'll call Unser.

(not technically a Church meeting)
Jury: Started the sports book with the escorts and the strip clubs. First stop over the border.
Jax: Must be churning some serious cash. Got the Mayans circling for a percentage
Jury: They're jamming me up, Jax. If I don't pay the Mexicans, they turn my business inside out. If I kick a vig up to 'em, I disrespect you guys.
Jax: Tribe attracts a good membership.
Jury: 18. Real good boys.
Jax: You still get along with local law?
Jury: Douglas Country? Sheriff likes the girls.
(Cherry and Susie interrupt)
Jury: So how are gonna handle the Mayans?
Jax: We're hoping actually maybe you could help us out with the problem.
Jury: Sure.
Jax: Got a garage full of AK-47s. Need a place to assemble and store 'em 'till we find a buyer. It's a temporary thing.
Jury: Got a strip club out on 95. Huge basement. Private.
Jax: Sounds perfect. Appreciate it.
Jury: You'll talk to Clay? Let me know how to handle this Mayan thing?
Jax: You can talk to him yourself. He's on his way.
Jury: Clay's coming out?
Jax: Yup. It's about the future, Jury.
Jury: Future of what?
Jax: The Tribe.
Jury: Jesus, Jax. Patch over?
Jax: It's time, Jury. This whole area is blowing up. We don't pay you over, Mayans will run right through you. We get a foothold in Nevada. You get status to protect your business. Best move for both clubs.
Jury: A lot of my guys aren't SAMCRO.
Jax: The ones that are cut out for it will make it. Others will fall off.
Jury: I'm not a young man anymore either, Jax. I don't know how much outlaw I got left in me.
Jury: You'll do fine, Jury.
Clay: Next time this gavel slams down, will be the last for the Devil's Tribe. History between our clubs. Jury and John Teller were in the same platoon in 'Nam. Needle's brother's a 20-year member of our Fresno charter. We have a deep respect for each other. Now, it's time to become brothers. I know some of you look forward to wearing the reaper. Others of you are afraid of it. That's a choice each man will have to make. (SOA Indian Hills patches are placed on table) From this point on, we're family. Indian Hills, Nevada charter, Sons of Anarchy. Congratulations. (Hands gavel to Jury) It's my personal hope that each and every one of you wears this kutte. I know you got a lot to talk about, I'll leave you to your business.
(Unknown dialog between the Devil's Tribe members as they discuss the idea of patching over into the Sons of Anarchy)
Jury: We're in.
(Clay rips Devil's Tribe poster off wall and spray paints "SOA")
(Clay and Jury hug, everybody applauds)
Happy: Patch over party!
(Everyone cheers)
