Margaret Murphy is an administrator at St. Thomas Hospital on the FX original series Sons of Anarchy. Played by American actress McNally Sagal, Margaret makes her debut on the episode "Eureka" in the series' second season. Tara Knowles' boss, she disapproves of Tara's relationship with Jax Teller and the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club. Playing a recurring role through the series' second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons, she was last seen in the Season 6 episode "Huang Wu".
Biography[]
As a young woman, Margaret was very troubled and often got in trouble; she was involved with an unnamed outlaw biker club and was romantically involved with their president, Margaret was so infatuated that she got a large biker tattoo on her back. On Christmas Eve, 1989, the two overdosed on heroin laced with fentanyl, Margaret's boyfriend died of an overdose whilst she spent four months comatose. This traumatic event would ultimately lead Margaret to turn her life around and seek a career in the medical field, trying to help others. Even decades later, Margaret kept her biker tattoos, wanting to use them as a reminder for how far she has come in life.
Season 2[]
"Balm"[]
Tara arrives for her shift at St. Thomas and is quickly accosted by Margaret. She tells her that she knows that she faked Chibs' symptoms to get him to stay in St. Thomas. Margaret tells that Tara will have to explain herself to the board and she is being suspended.
"The Culling"[]
Tara is doing some paperwork at St. Thomas. Margaret arrives and says that come next week, Tara might not have to worry about paperwork anymore. Tara insults her, saying she is too stupid to have been a doctor herself so she is compensating before grabbing her by the throat and throwing her against the wall after she insults Gemma. Tara punches her in the face, telling her she knows where she lives, where he kids go to school and SAMCRO can kill her if need be. Tara storms out, telling Margaret she suggests she drop the complaint against her.
Season 3[]
"Oiled"[]
Tara heads to the hospital and attempts to take a leave of 6 months, Margaret questions her and Tara immediately comes defensive, telling Margaret that she will be gone soon and that's what she wanted. Margaret tells Tara she should rethink her decision, St. Thomas needs good doctors like her.
Margaret becomes more supportive of Tara and encourages her not to waste her surgical talents. She is with Tara when Hector Salazar and his girlfriend, Luisa, take Tara hostage. When Tara claims Margaret has nothing to do with SAMCRO, Salazar lifts up Margaret's shirt to reveal a massive biker tattoo covering her back. Held captive by Salazar, Margaret reveals to Tara that when she was young, she ran with a biker gang, doing drugs with their leader, who she was in love with. On Christmas Eve, 1989, the two overdosed on heroin laced with Fentanyl, the biker dying and Margaret spending several months in a coma. When she awoke, she decided to turn her life around and kept the tattoo as a reminder of the life she left behind.
Season 4[]
Tara mortally wounds Luisa with a piece of broken mirror and negotiates Margaret's release. After their ordeal, Margaret becomes far more caring toward Tara, insisting the woman leave Charming to get a fresh life and going so far as to confront Gemma on not wanting to let Tara leave. She also gives Tara a recommendation for a hospital in Portland.

Margaret spent season 6 helping Tara lie and manipulate Jax, Wendy, Unser, and Gemma to try divorcing Jax and taking her kids away from them and SAMCRO.
