Biography[]

Background[]

Marcus Alvarez was the President of the Mayans Motorcycle Club's Oakland, California charter and seemed to be their overall leader in Northern California. His son, Esai Alvarez, was also a member of the club but was murdered by Happy Lowman in 2008. He had direct long-standing ties to cartel boss Jose Galindo. Most of his, and his gang's, income is made through dealing heroin and methamphetamine, and through prostitution until he left the Mayans to work for Miguel Galindo. For some time, he was a prisoner in Chino but was released sometime before the beginning of Season 1.

On his colors, he wears patches reading "Los Asesinos de Dios" (Spanish for "Assassins of God") and "Mayans Oakland". He has the Mayan calendar tattooed on his chest as seen in "Fruit For The Crows".

Sons of Anarchy[]

Season 1[]

"Pilot"[]

"Seeds"[]

Alvarez meets with Ernest Darby, the leader of the Nordics, a white supremacist organisation in Charming. Darby admits he never should've set the Mayans up to raid the Sons' warehouse. The deal went bad for all of them as both Nords and Mayans were killed when the Sons hit back and destroyed a Mayan warehouse. Darby says he needs some muscle as the Sons are going to be coming for him hard, and he wants them out of Charming. Alvarez says he can assist with that, but he shouldn't do anything drastic, they will both get what they want in the end.

"The Pull"[]

Darby wants to meet with Alvarez and tells him about the Sons gun operation information he obtained, he believes it is from the ATF. Alvarez is clearly interested with Darby also explaining he knows when, how and where the Sons' guns are coming in. Darby says all he wants from the Mayans is to kill Clarence "Clay" Morrow, the President of SAMCRO and then SAMCRO will fall, giving the Nords Charming, the Mayans get the Sons' guns and the Niners heroin trade. Alvarez is still unsure and Darby calls his bluff and walks away, only for Alvarez to call him back and try to reason that it isn't so simple, but Darby insists it is.

Alvarez then speaks to Esai, ordering that he make a hit on Darby and Clay separately.

"Hell Followed"[]

Alvarez is picked up and bought to the Charming station, he is annoyed when he is thrown in to a holding cell, after being told he is there for questioning. Alvarez is shocked and a little concerned to see Clay waiting inside the cell for him. Clay tells Alvarez that there must be something he isn't seeing, why would Alvarez want to kill him and Darby? Clay tells Alvarez that they are going to make a deal, he wants to sell guns to the Mayans. Alvarez sits, interested by the deal, he tells Clay that he wants to take over the Niners heroin trade, which he can't do without proper arms. Clay quickly shuts down the idea, saying that the Sons and the Niners are still allies and he will continue to sell to them, that being said Alvarez can do what he wants with the guns, as long as the bullets don't touch a Son, all beefs with the Mayans will be settled.

Alvarez then says he is concerned about the ATF, Clay attempts to dismiss this but Alvarez then tells Clay all about the Sons' IRA gun running operation, Clay is stunned that Alvarez knows the dealings of their business. Alvarez says he came across this information as an ATF agent sent Darby the intel on their operation, that was the payment for the hit on Clay. Alvarez tells Clay that he has a compromise which will leave everyone happy.

Alvarez meets with Esai, Esai is deeply apologetic about what happened and how he messed up the hit. Alvarez assures him it's okay as he sat down with Clay and as a result, the Sons will be selling guns to the Mayans, none of that would've happened without Esai. Alvarez and Esai walk to a churro vendor to buy some food, Alvarez hugs Esai deeply as the vendor turns and plunges an ice pick in to the back of Esai's head, killing him instantly, Alvarez gently places Esai's body on the ground before kissing his head and passing the hitman, Happy Lowman of the Sons of Anarchy Tacoma charter an envelope with cash in.

Season 2[]

After Season Two started Clay had Opie murder a member of the Mayans who Clay framed as the guy who murdered Donna. After Opie murdered the Mayan and carved the Anarchy symbol in his chest Jax dropped off the body in Mayan Territory in Oakland after removing the Anarchy Symbol and then having the guy throw up 9 fingers making it look like the One-Niners did the hit. Alvarez later found the body and gave Clay a call asking to buy weapons. Clay turned Alvarez down on the weapons transaction telling him the club was still in ATF's cross hairs however he told Tig to call Laroy of the One-Niners to setup a meeting to supply Niners with Weapons so that they could defend themselves when the Mayans attacked. During the weapons transaction between SAMCRO and the Niners the Mayans ambushed the deal and stole all the Niner's AKs. Bobby also got shot in the shoulder during the ambush. After the ambush went down and the Mayans got away, Alvarez was seen making a phone call to Ethan Zobelle of L.O.A.N. telling him his intel was correct and that he owed him. Zobelle responded with yes you do and then told AJ Weston that it was his friend from church on the phone. Before the end of the episode Clay blamed the whole ambush and Bobby getting shot in the shoulder on Jax since Jax changed the plan and set the Niners up for the hit instead of leaving Anarchy symbol on the dead Mayans chest.

M Season3

In the episode "Service", Zobelle met with Marcus Alvarez offering the Mayans the exclusive business of having their heroin distributed to all the local prisons. Alvarez is hesitant about the deal because Zobelle wants to keep 50% of the profits, but has no choice when Zobelle tells him that he won't supply the Mayans with any more weapons if they don't go along with the new arrangement.

In the second season finale, Marcus and the Mayans provided protection to Ethan Zobelle and Zobelle's daughter who were attempting to flee Charming. Marcus was eventually able to convince Zobelle to leave his cigar shop, but the Mayan convoy they attempted to escape in was ambushed by SAMCRO. Marcus survived the attack uninjured and Clay spared his life.

Season 3[]

The Mayans use the Calaveras MC as a "puppet club" to push more drugs, with the intention of eventually patching them over. However, the Calaveras president, Hector Salazar, proves to be a major problem and a loose cannon, resulting in Alvarez stripping him of his patch and appointing a new president. After this, Salazar kidnaps Tara Knowles and Margaret Murphy, asking SAMCRO for $250,000 and Alvarez dead. Although hesitant, Alvarez agrees to play dead for 24 hours to allow SAMCRO to try and rescue Tara.

Season 4[]

During the 14 month sentence SAMCRO was serving in prison, Alvarez set them up with protection, which was referenced by Clay at Opie's wedding. Alvarez also set SAMCRO up with a distribution deal with the Galindo Cartel. The agreement was that SAMCRO would store the cartel's cocaine in their gun warehouse, while the Mayans would distribute it. During this time, however, Juice Ortiz was being threatened by Eli Roosevelt and Lincoln Potter, which led to him stealing a brick of cocaine. Both the Mayans and SAMCRO are unaware that Juice stole it, with both factions blaming each other. Alvarez responds to this by saying, "It doesn't matter if he's Mayan or Son, that bitch is dead." Juice later frames Eric Miles as the rat. At the same time, the cartel was at war with the Lobos Sonora Cartel, when it is discovered that there is an informant working for them. The informant is later revealed to be a fellow Mayan named Pedro. Later, Alvarez is shot during a shootout with Lobos Sonora members and is treated by Tara at the SAMCRO clubhouse.

Season 5[]

When SAMCRO wants out of the drug business, the Mayans agree to take over for SAMCRO with muling the cocaine for the cartel.

Season 6[]

Alvarez and the Mayans only appear at the end of the sixth season, expressing their unhappiness with SAMCRO's decision to hand over the IRA gun business to August Marks. He also informs Jax of the Mayans' intention of setting up a charter in Stockton. Alvarez is also shown to be an old prison friend of Nero. Alvarez tells Nero that soon it might end up being "brown and yellow against black and white."

Season 7[]

At the beginning of the seventh season, the Mayans have set up their Stockton charter with Oscar El Oso Ramos as president. Alvarez and the Mayans seem to be on the same side as Henry Lin and the Lin Triad against SAMCRO and the Niners. However, Alvarez joins SAMCRO's side when they believe the Triads are to blame for Tara's death and they help both SAMCRO and the One-Niners deal with both the Triads and August Marks. Alvarez is shown to be fully on SAMCRO's side when Juice approaches him offering information on SAMCRO in exchange for passage to Mexico. Alvarez hands Juice over to SAMCRO, saying he would never make a deal with a rat. When it is revealed that it was Gemma who killed Tara and not the Triads, Alvarez sympathizes with Jax and helps him clean up the mess with the Chinese. Later, the Mayans, One-Niners, SAMCRO and the Byz Lats discuss territories and business. One of Jax's final acts as president of SAMCRO is to set the Mayans up with Connor Malone as their new gun source, finally giving Alvarez the gun business he wanted.

"The Pull"[]

Darby decides to try and pull in the Mayans again, he meets with Alvarez and tells Alvarez about the Sons gun operation information he obtained, he believes it is from the ATF. Taza, Hank and Bishop explain that they knew all along from Galindo that Jimmy was a traitor but the Chinese will not kill one of their own so Galindo asked them to take care of him. They kept it between the three of them until the leader of the Chinese family confirmed the killing.

Devante later calls Alvarez to confirm that the Chinese play went down successfully. Bishop arrives and Alvarez says their debt is now cleared with the cartel. Alvarez reiterates that he hasn't forgotten that someone told Los Olvidados about their shipment and there could still be a traitor in the club.

The club are astounded at what they are seeing and hearing. Luisa then addresses everyone in attendance and her and Miguel confirm they are no longer enemies but are in fact partners. After the meeting Bishop, Alvarez and Miguel discuss the new deal. Bishop says it will need to be taken to the table but he sees no issue with the partnership. Alvarez and Hobart's mercs head to a safehouse filled with human traffickers they meet the club there. As part of Miguel's deal with Lincoln Potter. The club plans to plant evidence to make it seem like it was Los Olvidados that were working from the house so as to not arouse suspicion that the club and the cartel are working with them. The club, the mercs and Alvarez breach the house and kill the occupants, taking extra care to destroy any intel that would expose that this is not a Los Olvidados safehouse before planting their own fake evidence.

One of the mercs is able to capture Mini, a young member of Los Olvidados and the mercs plan to torture her for information. Alvarez and the club return to the house and kill the mercs before they are able to hurt Mini. They realise that Hobart, who had already left will quickly figure out what happened to his men.

Alvarez interrupts a fight between Miguel and Emily to tell Miguel there is someone to see him, the pair head outside and Miguel is disappointed to see Potter and Linares outside. Alvarez affirms that he didn't think Potter was even in town anymore. Potter explains that he has a proposal for Miguel but he attempts to dismiss it saying he is fully booked today, Potter simply informs Miguel that he in fact doesn't have anything scheduled for the day. Sensing the threat, Miguel agrees. Emily reappears again and kisses Miguel goodbye. Alvarez says he will be coming too, but Linares refuses. Miguel whispers in Alvarez's ear to check on Luisa and investigate Felipe.

Alvarez goes to Vicki's place and links up with Neron "Creeper" Vargas and Riz who are looking after Luisa. Luisa mentions that Mini is very sad about what the man from the previous night said about her. Alvarez sits with Mini and tells her about all of the scars and wounds on his body; he tells her that scars are a reminder that they are strong survivors and people should be proud of them. Mini hugs Alvarez.

Alvarez later visits Felipe and explains that Miguel has asked him to come down and personally thank Felipe for taking care of Dita. Felipe brushes it aside and attempts to get Alvarez to leave. Alvarez continues to ask probing questions, he asks how Dita could end up outside Felipe's shop when they are nowhere near each other, Felipe says that only Dita could answer that question. Felipe pressures Alvarez to get to the point, Alvarez gives Felipe a card and says that if Dita ever returns to call Galindo and they will take care of her, Felipe is to never assist her again. As Alvarez leaves Felipe takes a quick dig at him, asking how all of Galindo's men could have possibly let an elderly woman escape from them. Alvarez implores that Felipe only worry about himself.

They don't have time to figure out why, Luisa realises she has to do something to keep the façade up, she takes guns from Galindo's men and barricades herself in a nearby shop, telling Miguel that when the mercenaries arrive, act like they've captured her, Miguel is very against the idea but knows that there isn't any other play to be made. The mercenaries arrive and Alvarez marches outside with Luisa at gunpoint, Hobart, the leader of the mercenaries hired by Potter quickly takes Luisa away as she spits in his face and curses out Miguel. The act was successful at making the cartel look like they are on Potter's side.

"Xquic"[]

Alvarez and Miguel link up with the Mayans. They explain to the club that Luisa has been arrested, Potter also wants Miguel's help transporting her but he believes this to be a test as he is growing suspicious. He then introduces the club to Palomo, they plan to rescue Luisa.

The relentless torture continues but Alvarez stays strong, he notices some wind turbines outside and begins to plan to get a message to the club and the cartel, he tells the interrogator that they hired some brothers to do the hit and says he will give them phone numbers to make contact.

Alvarez is able to get a coded message sent out and one of the attackers approaches him again and tells him they haven't heard anything. Alvarez questions the man if Potter ordered his kidnapping or if it was all Hobart's doing, who he has realised is the interrogator. Hobart removes his mask and jams a knife straight through Alvarez's hand, sarcastically noting that it's good he doesn't ride anymore, he gives Alvarez's contact 10 minutes or he will cut his hands off.

Alvarez anxiously waits before the warehouse is stormed by the club and the cartel, they massacre all of the mercenaries until only Hobart is left alive. EZ hands Alvarez a wrench and he brutally beats Hobart to death with it.

Miguel is also shocked to learn that Potter also had a son with this woman. Palomo is worried that Miguel will hurt the innocent woman and her child but Miguel denies this, saying it is just "potential leverage" to assist Luisa.

"Itzam-Ye"[]

Alvarez enters the room after an argument between Miguel and Emily. Alvarez offers if he can be of any assistance and Miguel agrees. He asks him to look further in to Marlon Buksar's supposed suicide that he thinks Emily was involved in, and Felipe's involvement with Dita. Miguel suspects that Emily, Dita and the Reyes family are all in on something together.

Alvarez heads to the clubhouse and sits in Templo with Bishop and Hank. He enquires about a recent gun deal between the Mayans, the Sons and the Vatos Malditos that went wrong after the VM attacked the Mayans, leaving Coco injured and Riz in a coma. Bishop explains that the Sons will find another partner if they can't work out an agreement. Alvarez attempts to offer some advice but says he has a connection to the Sons and it isn't his place to say. They figure out that Bishop will have the deciding vote on making peace with the VM, or retaliating. Alvarez tells Bishop that the Mayans isn't the same club he founded anymore and it's much bigger and sophisticated and Bishop says he's up for the challenge of being a Mayan King. Alvarez confesses that he misses the club and heads out.

Outside he meets Coco, Angel and EZ and asks to speak to EZ alone. He begins to question him about his recently involvement with Emily and why she keeps showing up around Felipe's shop. EZ plays it cool and says he doesn't know what is going on with Emily.

Alvarez returns to the Galindo house and speaks to Miguel, he says he was unable to get any information out of EZ. Miguel all but accuses Alvarez of having a loyalty conflict but Alvarez assures him he will dig deeper.

"Hunahpu"[]

The Galindo household is in full panic after Miguel learns that Dita stole a car and has disappeared, Alvarez tells him they have the sheriffs looking. A sobbing Emily runs down the stairs with a letter, presumably one of suicide. The note details a location and they rush to it. A devastated Miguel falls to his knees as he sees the charred corpse of his mother. Alvarez tells Paco to give them a few minutes and then escort them away and calls the sheriffs.

Alvarez and Nestor investigate the scene and discover bike tracks leading away from the scene. Nestor sees them too but Alvarez gives him a dangerous look as he asks him to get Paco to escort Emily and Miguel away. He scuffs dirt over the bike tracks.

Alvarez receives a visit from Bishop and EZ. Bishop wants to talk business but Alvarez has some questions first. He heard that when Santo Padre went to meet with the other charters to discuss the pipeline issues, Bishop freaked out and cut off the rest of the charters after they demanded compensation. Bishop interjects and explains that is why he is here, he wants to do a huge drug run over the border, literally. Alvarez is happy to hear this, believing it means he will see eye to eye again with Canche and Oscar "El Oso" Ramos, the two other Mayan kings. Alvarez says he will make it happen for tonight.

"Dark, Deep-laid Plans"[]

Alvarez and Nestor go to visit Juan Denver, a smuggler who is helping them transport large amounts of drugs over the border. Upon arriving they find the place deserted, some investigation turns up the burned remains of Juan. They find evidence that the murder and burning of their drugs was done by the Lobos New Generation cartel, a rival cartel looking to move on Galindo territory. Alvarez is puzzled by the choice to burn the drugs rather than steal them and theorises it is a warning from the cartel.

The pair return to the Galindo house and Alvarez decides that after witnessing a moment between him and Emily, that the news of the LNG can wait until tomorrow.

"You Can't Pray a Lie"[]

The following day Nestor and Alvarez catch Miguel up on what they discovered at Juan Denver's site. Alvarez's phone continuously rings throughout the brief encounter. Miguel questions why the LNG would suddenly have the nerve to attack. Alvarez asks what needs to be done but Miguel brushes him aside, telling him he'll handle it and Alvarez should answer his phone.

Alvarez finally answers his phone and tells the dialler he will call them back, Nestor enquires what the call was about and Alvarez tells him "family issue" he also asks Nestor for his help.

Alvarez has learned that EZ was shot the previous night by Flaco, a Mayan from Stockton after recent internal struggles between the Santo Padre charter and others. The attempted hit was retaliation. Alvarez wants to damage control so sends Nestor to guard EZ's attacker.

At the clubhouse, Alvarez finally arrives to confront Bishop about what he has done. Bishop is furious as he has always done everything Alvarez's way and now when one of his brothers is attacked Alvarez sides with Canche and Oscar "El Oso" Ramos, the two other Mayan kings over his own blood. Bishop becomes extremely emotional and essentially blames Alvarez for the death of his son who's birthday it is today as he made him come to Santo Padre. Bishop spits venom at Alvarez, reminding him that he gave up his seat at the table and he isn't a Mayan. Alvarez threatens Bishop to not do anything before leaving.

Izzy enquires why he seems so upset and Alvarez explains he's been thinking about his own son, Esai a lot recently. Esai was killed on Alvarez's orders by SAMCRO many years ago to form an alliance between the two clubs. Alvarez sadly explains that due to his own actions his own son will never get to meet his half sister, Tessa, or meet his step mother Izzy. Before he met Izzy he was a different person and put everything in front of his own blood, especially the club. Izzy gets emotional as Alvarez explains that work is bringing all these thoughts back to him as he feels he is about to do the same again. Izzy tells Alvarez he simply shouldn't let it happen but he replies telling her it isn't that simple. The true nature of Alvarez's involvement in the cartel clearly unknown to Izzy.

"Chapter the Last, Nothing More to Write"[]

Alvarez deeply thinks about what he has been tasked to do today and removes his Mayans ring. He steps outside and finds Nestor waiting, Nestor explains that Miguel asked him to ride with Alvarez, in case there is trouble. Alvarez sarcastically asks, "With my conscience, or EZ Reyes?" and demands Nestor get in the car.

Alvarez and Nestor wait in the car outside Felipe's shop. EZ finally arrives and Nestor says for Alvarez to do it now, he refuses, saying that Felipe has seen enough death in that shop and they wait until EZ has left. EZ emerges moments later and begins to ride away, Alvarez cocks his gun and drives after him. They stop at red lights and Nestor tells Alvarez to shoot EZ out of his window when they drive past him. As the lights go green, Alvarez throws the car in neutral. Nestor quickly puts the gun up to his head as Alvarez remarks, "guess we figured out where my loyalties lie". Nestor says he will kill Alvarez for Miguel, he is his family. Alvarez reveals his own gun and says the club is his family. Sensing that Nestor will not be able to kill him, Alvarez tells Nestor he needs to choose between being a dead errand boy, or his own man.

Nestor and Alvarez are able to find mutual ground, they watch on TV as Miguel's home is raided by the feds and he continuously rings Nestor.

Season 4[]

"Cleansing of the Temple"[]

An enraged Alvarez arrives at the Santo Padre clubhouse amidst death and destruction. Canche has lead a war along with the other chapters upon Santo Padre. Alvarez demands to know what has happened. He directs Bishop and asks him what he has done.

"Hymn Among the Ruins"[]

We time jump four months in to the future after the civil war.

Santo Padre and other charters head in to Templo with Alvarez sitting at the head of the table once again.

The club are discussing the new drug plan and an argument soon breaks out over Yuma's part, they have been stepping on the heroin with fentanyl. Downer, a Yuma Mayan argues that since Canche took over the drug supplying from Santo Padre, profits have never been higher and a "few dead junkies is the price of what we do". EZ asks if the club has heard anything about the Galindo family and Hank says he presumes they are dead as the Lobos New Generation Cartel (LNG) has been stepping on Galindo turf since Miguel went missing. Angel pipes up and says he hated the cartel, especially Nestor. The club crack up but an annoyed Alvarez quickly silences them. Alvarez then says that the Yuma pipeline and partnership with the LNG is the future of the club. Taza speaks up and says that Santo Padre haven't had any action in months and feel like they are being left out. An argument quickly arises but Alvarez throws everyone out of Templo before any physical fights can break out.

Hank later visits Alvarez at his home the same night to report on the status of the club, he admits to Alvarez that Bishop is still against peace, as are some of the other club members.

"Self Portrait in Blue Bathroom"[]

The club sits at the table with the other charters, Canche has proposed the idea of working with the LNG. They need an accountant smuggled over the border. Some members are unsure but EZ speaks up and says that he, Angel and Manny will take the job. Bishop soon becomes angry at Alvarez and accuses him of not being a leader, Alvarez tosses a knife at Bishop and demands he cut off his Vice President flash, Bishop does so and Taza follows suit, also removing his Vice President flash. Alvarez then tosses Bishop's flash towards EZ and ends the meeting.

Later Canche, Alvarez, Dondo, Mayans Stockton President and Rooster, Mayans Portland President sit in Templo. Everyone agrees they want Santo Padre cut from the club but Alvarez refuses, stating the likes of EZ and Manny are the future of the Mayans and he has no doubt they will be successful in their mission later tonight.

Alvarez later visits Nestor, who is now working as a security guard. The pair are seen talking and apparently make a deal but nothing is revealed to us yet.

"A Crow Flew By"[]

At the table, Canche is furious to learn that the plan with Randall, the accountant went wrong and he turned out to be a child molester and EZ, Angel and Manny killed him. Canche demands to know what he should tell Banquero but Alvarez tells Canche that they did the right thing in killing Randall, Canche objects and says all they have done is kill the LNG drug pipeline. Alvarez then also informs Santo Padre that they have a new prospect, sponsored by him and it is Nestor.

Coco is summoned in to Templo by Alvarez. Alvarez tells Coco that he is proud of the progress he is made and he wants to send him to the Oakland charter to assist in repairing the rift between the charters. Coco is happy to accept when he learns that when he returns to Santo Padre he will get his bottom rocker back.

Alvarez brings EZ back in to Templo and shows him a book detailing the Mayans history, he explains he made EZ VP as he has a good idea of what the club can be but he wants him to read the book.

Alvarez is annoyed when Izzy tells him that she has invited Bishop round for dinner. The pair have never been on worse terms since Alvarez publicly humiliated him and stripped him of his VP flash. EZ visits Alvarez's home and asks for a moment of his time. EZ tells Alvarez that he has been reading the old Mayan laws and wants to reinstate the "kill-switch clause" which is the idea that if a club unanimously votes against a President, they can be removed or overruled. EZ suggests adding this back, presumably to try and get rid of Canche. Alvarez says nothing but he seems to be in agreement with the short speech about brotherhood EZ gave him.

"Death of the Virgin"[]

Many charters later go to the Santo Padre clubhouse. They are holding a ceremony for those who died during the civil war in an attempt to heal the rift between Santo Padre and the rest of the club.

Diaz and Canche pull Alvarez aside and tell him that El Banquero has cut off their drug shipment due to the club failing to deliver his accountant alive.

Alvarez addresses the club inside the Santo Padre clubhouse, telling them this is the start of a new chapter and the civil war is behind them, the club must reunite. They pay tributes to their dead. Creeper pays tribute to Pavia, Dondo to Ramos and Hank to Esteban "Steve" Estrada most notably, other charters also honour their dead.

Diaz later joins Alvarez in Templo, trying to convince Alvarez to cut out the Santo Padre chapter. He insists that they divide of the club and that a club divided cannot stand. Diaz, noticing a picture Alvarez is holding, digs deep in trying to convince Alvarez to cut out Santo Padre. He reminds Alvarez that he has had no problem making tough calls in the past, having had his own son, Esai Alvarez, killed for the good of the club. Diaz reminds Alvarez that it was the right call and warns him that a similar call may need to be made with his cousin.

Alvarez later exits Templo to find a mass brawl occurring in the clubhouse, he fires off some shots to calm the horde. He addresses Diaz and says that maybe he was right about "cutting out the cancer."

"When I Die, I Want Your Hands on my Eyes"[]

Alvarez is awoken in the middle of the night by a phone call, presumably from Hank. He learns of the harrowing news that the Oakland clubhouse was attacked and many Mayans lie dead, including Coco.

He arrives at the clubhouse and everyone begins demanding answers that Alvarz doesn't have.

Alvarez sits at the table with Canche, Otero, Hank and EZ as the club try to figure out who is behind the hit. He says he doesn't know who to trust and can't even trust everyone at the table. This enrages Canche who reminds EZ that he started the civil war in the first place. Canche leaves and Alvarez scolds him for his reaction.

Hank later returns to the table to speak to Alvarez in private as he has learned that it was in fact the Sons who were responsible for the hit on Oakland. The Sons didn't try to hide their identities and seemingly wanted the Mayans to know. Hank tells Alvarez that nobody else knows and Alvarez says they should keep it that way, Hank appears irritated that Alvarez still doesn't want to do anything but agrees.

EZ speaks to Alvarez to see if there is any news developing. Alvarez tells EZ that he is tired of the fighting and the wars he has seen over the years. EZ reiterates to Alvarez that he wants answers and he replies saying it isn't that simple before saying Coco's death is on him as he sent him to Oakland.

The club return to Templo after confirmation that it was the Sons who attacked Oakland. Alvarez informs them that they will react but not right now as the club is still too divided. He wants to reach out to SAMCRO first. Creeper speaks up and says that he doesn't want to wait and wants to fight now, Gilberto "Gilly" Lopez agrees. EZ bravely squares up to Alvarez and tells him they aren't waiting and will act now. He proposes a plan that the club will kill Les Packer, President of SAMDINO who is currently in hospital undergoing chemotherapy and is unlikely to survive much longer. They take out Packer and they take out their leadership. Taza remarks that it is a suicide mission and EZ agrees saying that is why he will do it along with Angel and Gilly. Hank pipes up and says that Gilly shouldn't go, he needs to stay and defend Santo Padre. Manny says he will take his place and the club is in agreement. Alvarez reminds EZ how dangerous this plan is but agrees nonetheless.

"Dialogue with the Mirror"[]

Alvarez sits with Bishop and the atmosphere is incredibly tense, the two have been squaring up since Alvarez stripped EZ's patch. Alvarez invites Bishop to dinner that night, it is his wife Izzy Alvarez's birthday and she wants Bishop to be there. Bishop initially laughs it off and refuses but Alvarez tells him he is going to come for Izzy who has been nothing but good to Bishop.

Bishop later goes to Alvarez's house for Izzy's birthday. He arrives late, to which Alvarez scolds him for and wearing his kutte. He sits at their table but declines a drink from Izzy as he has bought his own; which he begins to drink. Bishop is continuously hostile during the dinner when asked any questions. He mentions that he has recently been "demoted at work" to which Alvarez hisses at him from across the table to not discuss this in his home. Izzy's friend, Maggie arrives. Bishop continues to listen to Maggie's travel stories and then tells the table that he has "Been to Iraq a couple of times, Al-Qaeda, so warm and welcoming" and that Iraq was "amazing" as he chugs down more of Izzy's wine. The conversation then switches to grandchildren and Maggie tells Bishop that one day he will get to experience the joys of being a grandparent. The room goes silent and the tension is obvious to everyone in the room except Maggie, Bishop stands and announces that he is going to leave.

He heads outside and Alvarez soon joins him. Alvarez says that Izzy was just trying to do something for him as his family are worried about him and that their bond is deeper than just the club. Alvarez tells Bishop that if he has a problem with him then he can leave the club. Bishop scoffs that Alvarez's problem is that he thinks too much about his family and he's too scared to pull the trigger. Alvarez says he doesn't want more brothers dying on the street but Bishop snaps back that they already are and Alvarez needs to wake up. Bishop rides away.

"The Righteous Wrath of an Honorable Man"[]

The club attends Templo with Yuma, Stockton and Oakland. Alvarez announces that the war ends today and they will do it by wiping out all of SAMDINO. The rest of the club are dismissed whilst the Presidents address Alvarez. Alvarez insists on going to San Bernardino with his club to fight alongside them but Diaz, Canche and Dondo refuse. Canche insists he will ride with Santo Padre in Alvarez' place. Diaz addresses Alvarez and claims that "We're old men, we had ours, this is their war; their time. Let them have it, let them earn it."

Alvarez visits a tranquil ranch with his daughter and watches on whilst she rides horses. He knows that his club is at war and feels uncomfortable being in such an opposite situation.

Alvarez later returns to the clubhouse where he sees that the club have been victorious in eliminating most of SAMDINO. It wasn't without cost however, Canche was killed during the raid. Alvarez leads a toast to Canche along with Diaz and they celebrate his life and their victory.

"The Calling of Saint Matthew"[]

Alvarez finds Miguel staking out his house, Alvarez draws a gun on his former employer who he believed to be dead. He quickly explains to Alvarez that he isn't here to hurt anyone, he claims he has an offer but Alvarez quickly turns this down, claiming he doesn't work for anyone. Miguel retorts by saying that Alvarez was invited in to his family and abandoned him and that he owes him.

Alvarez decides to hear Miguel out and brings along EZ to the meeting. Alvarez and EZ are alone in a warehouse when Alvarez informs EZ he needs to put the past and what happened with Dita behind him, EZ is confused as to why Alvarez is mentioning this and doesn't really know what is happening, Alvarez only told him that the club has a business opportunity. Alvarez has barely finished delivering his warning when Miguel and El Banquero’s sister, Soledad arrive. EZ is shocked to see Miguel alive and well and Miguel in turn had no idea EZ was going to attend this meeting. Soledad set up this meeting to suggest a new business arrangement between the cartel and the Mayans, with Miguel explaining the deal would “challenge the belief that brutality and profit need to co-exist.” Soledad wants to dramatically increase the amount of product sold by the Mayans immediately. Miguel believes the Mayans can handle this and is ready to become the liaison between the cartel and the club. He’ll work directly with Alvarez since they have a long-standing relationship. Alvarez agrees to consider the deal and Soledad suggests he do so quickly. She continues saying that El Banquero is unaware of this new partnership and he will be dealt with.

The club meet and Alvarez reveals he and EZ met with Miguel Galindo and El Banquero’s sister, Soledad about reopening the drug pipeline. The club are shocked to learn that Miguel is still alive. EZ believes this deal could put Santo Padre back on top and will make them untouchable. The club likes that idea but Alvarez announces he’s going to say no to which there is much disagreement with. Alvarez believes the deal is poison and they don’t need it. Gilly points out this decision will leave them vulnerable, but Alvarez is determined to end the bloodshed. Bishop disagrees and calls for the death of all Sons. EZ agrees with Bishop and doesn’t think now is the time to change course. Alvazrez is certain they need to step back, but Gilly and Hank throw their support behind EZ. Alvzrez doesn’t care. It’s his decision and the matter is now closed.

Taza then speaks up, he announces that he doesn't like the direction the club is heading in and he has decided he would like to go Nomad. Bishop is immediately outraged, telling Taza he can't run from all the things he has done and EZ too pipes up to voice his distaste at Taza's actions. Nevertheless Taza insists and Alvarez ultimately allows the transfer.

"When the Breakdown Hit at Midnight"[]

The club attend the funeral for Coco along with other Mayans members. The club individually pay their respects. Letty goes to speak and curses the club, blaming them for the death of Coco and says she will never forgive them.

Alvarez travels to Los Angeles to meet with an old friend, SAMCRO Vice President Alexander "Tig" Trager. Tig and Alvarez have been allies for many years, since the original peace between the Mayans and Sons after Jax's death. They meet to discuss a truce between the Sons and the Mayans due to the ongoing war between the former allied clubs. Tig reveals the truth about the war to Alvarez. Allesandro "Domingo" Montez was found dead on Mayan property dumped in a barrel. Alvarez claims to know nothing of this incident. Alvarez admits to Tig that he's been thinking about his son, Esai Alvarez a lot recently. Alvarez had Esai killed by SAMCRO member Happy Lowman, to bring peace between the Mayans and the Sons previously. Tig tells him that he shouldn't think of him anymore. Alvarez tells Tig that he is sure he will get what he deserves one day.

Alvarez attempts to ask Tig about his daughter, Dawn Trager who was burned alive by Damon Pope many years ago. Tig quickly cuts him off, not wanting to discuss the sensitive topic. Tig tries to explain to Alvarez that Esai bought everything on himself.

Tig tells Alvarez he will return to Charming and speak with SAMCRO President Chibs, about ending the war. Due to Alvarez having no knowledge about the death of Montez and how he wants peace. Tig warns Alvarez about Les Packer's brother, who has returned to SAMDINO for the war, his brother is said to be deranged and incredibly dangerous and has it out for the Mayans. Alvarez reminds Tig that if peace is off the table, it is probably the last time they will meet in the manner they have. The two allies embrace and Tig rides away.

EZ speaks to Alvarez, who confirms that he had a meeting with a member of SAMCRO about ending the war between the Mayans and the Sons. Alvarez tries to reason that peace is the best answer but EZ is so blinded buy his fuel for revenge that he can't see past it. EZ reiterates how badly the club need the heroin deal with Miguel and the LNG. EZ tells Alvarez that not taking the deal will kill the club, Alvarez dismisses this and tells EZ "It'll keep you all from dying."

At Templo later, the Santo Padre Mayans declare they still want revenge, but Alvarez wants peace, saying there's now a ceasefire with the Sons of Anarchy. They are also horrified to learn that multiple Yuma Mayans, including Manny have been burned alive by SAMDINO, Alvarez defends the attack saying it was unsanctioned by some rogue Sons and peace is still on the table. EZ refuses to accept anything less than surrender and soon brings up the kill switch, which allows a charter to remove a president via unanimous vote. Although Angel seemingly hesitates, the club votes to remove Alvarez, choosing war over peace. Alvarez angrily pounds his fist on the table, reminding all present that this is his club and he has made many sacrifices for them. He exits, stating that he will be happy he's not around to see the club burn.

Alvarez solemnly returns home. He parks his bike in his garage and removes his kutte, he lays it on the back of his bike and stares sadly as he closes the garage door. Symbolising him closing shutting the club life away. Something he worked his entire life to build.

Season 5[]

"Lord Help My Poor Soul"[]

Alvarez sees Santi trying on his kutte, he yells at the boy and grabs the kutte off his shoulders. A pregnant Izzy arrives and scolds Alvarez before leading Santi away. Alvarez neatly places the kutte back on his bike.

Alvarez, not being a super fan of motorcycles anymore, is working on a vintage car. EZ arrives and tries to talk to him. EZ explains that the club is in a bad way but Alvarez tells him that it isn't his club anymore. EZ pleads again, telling Alvarez that so many brothers have died, he asks how Alvarez survived the first war with the Sons of Anarchy, decades ago over wearing the "California" patch. Alvarez question if EZ is thinking of surrendering to the Sons but EZ refuses, saying he just wants the death to stop. Alvarez admits that EZ is the first person from the club to visit him in the last six months, not one other brother over 40 years. EZ tries to speak about the killswitch vote but Alvarez cuts him off, informing EZ he is having a baby. EZ apologises to Alvarez for forcing him out of the club. Alvarez admits to EZ that he really does like him, but if he ever shows up at his house again, he'll shoot him.

"Do You Hear the Rain"[]

Alvarez is approached by Tessa, she tries to talk to her father about school, but he seems largely uninterested in his family life right now. Tessa tells him that he is missing lots of important things and sadly leaves, Alvarez makes no attempt to explain himself.

Alvarez and Diaz catch up, the two are reminiscing on old club times, in true twisted sense, it was when they were killing two brothers. They hear a door slam, and Alvarez tells Diaz that it is just Izzy, she has been angry lately.

Diaz notes that Alvarez' life is simple, people dream about having his life, perhaps minus the baby he will soon be having. Alvarez can't help but mention the war, Diaz simply tells him not to worry about it, and tells him he should worry more about his family. Sarcastically noting that he can leave the dying to the rest of the club.

"I Want Nothing but Death"[]

Alvarez and his family are attending Maggie's family birthday party. Alvarez sees Bishop approaching and immediately gathers his family and leaves, refusing to listen to the protests of his daughter. He walks straight past Bishop, ignoring him.

They return home and Izzy tells Alvarez that she he has been given enough time to grieve for his "old life" clearly referencing the club. She continues saying that she refuses to live with him like this anymore, he needs to sort himself out or she is gone.

Taking Izzy's strong words to heart. Alvarez spends that evening with Santi.

"Her Blacks Crackle and Drag"[]

Alvarez is cooking breakfast for his family. He receives a phone call but repeatedly denies it, he finally picks it up when Izzy points it out. Whoever is on the other end delivers the crushing news to Alvarez that Diaz has been killed. The broken expression on Alvarez' face says it all as he stares at Izzy.

Alvarez enters his garage, he picks up his kutte from his bike before placing it aside, he slowly runs his hand over his bike before finally mounting it and racing off.

Alvarez makes his way to a garage where he locates Rane Quinn, a member of SAMCRO and a man he has known for many years through the club's past alliances. He places a gun to Quinn's back, telling him that Diaz was his best friend, and a Son killed him. Quinn, unfazed by Alvarez' threat, tells him that he heard about the Mayans vote to remove him as Presidente, and he couldn't believe it, he turns as he says this, and Alvarez takes the opportunity to put the barrel of the gun against Quinn's neck. Alvarez asks who killed Diaz, as he threatens the other Sons not to try anything or he will kill Quinn. Quinn proclaims innocence, claiming that he knows nothing about Diaz and Happy also thought that Oakland and Charming had a truce. This leaves Alvarez confused, as Quinn informs him that the Reyes brothers murdered Happy a few weeks ago. Quinn tells Alvarez that he should look to his own to find Diaz' killer. Alvarez finally relents, taking the gun out of Quinn's face and discarding it, before leaving.

Later that night, Alvarez slowly cuts off all of his Mayans rockers and flashes off his kutte before burning them. As he slices away at the Presidente flash, he stares solemnly at it before also tossing it in the flames.

"Slow to Bleed Fair Son"[]

Alvarez' son is born, him and his family are at the hospital whilst necessary checks are done.

Bishop goes to the hospital to see Alvarez. Bishop believes now is a good as time as ever to reconcile and move past their differences. Alvarez admits that he didn't know what he was thinking, having another baby at his age, he probably won't be around for his son's graduation and will never meet his children. Alvarez asks Bishop if he thinks he is doing the right thing and Bishop says he certainly knows that one of them is. Bishop gets emotional as he tells Alvarez to spend every minute he can with his son. Alvarez asks Bishop if he wants to meet the baby, Bishop declines, stating he will come by another time; this is Alvarez' moment.

Alvarez is concerned as he watches his cousin slowly walk away from him, unlike himself, Bishop isn't free from the chains of being a Mayan. Alvarez hopes that Bishop will be able to be at peace one day too, before it's too late.

Murders Committed[]
