Biography[]

Background[]

Gemma was born in Oregon on September 15, 1957 and is a resident of Charming, California, after her father, Rev. Madock accepted a position in Charming United Church. She met John Teller, a Vietnam War veteran and founder of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, on May 12, 1977, after leaving home in 1975. Two months after meeting JT Teller, she became pregnant on July 29th. She had two children: Jackson 'Jax' Teller born in March 28, 1978 and Thomas Teller born in January 8, 1984. Gemma has a genetic heart disorder which she passed on to her children, from which Thomas died in April 4, 1990. John was hit by a semi-truck and died in 1993. Gemma married John's friend Clay Morrow, after carrying on an open affair with him for quite some time. She is of Irish (father) and Russian Jewish (mother) descent. From the time she left Charming in 1975 until she met JT Teller, she became best friends with Luann, who was involved in the porn industry. It is not revealed whether Gemma was involved in porn herself. She supports Luann strongly. Luann was her Maid of Honor at her wedding to JT in 1978. She lives in the same house she shared with John, at 5024 Sandy Creek Rd. in Charming.

The strongest supporter of SAMCRO, Gemma personally involved herself with club matters to secure the club's future, and prioritized her family over everything else. Though she often used unscrupulous methods, her intentions were usually for the best, or at least the betterment of the club or her family, which she usually viewed as one.

Season 1[]

"Pilot"[]

Gemma Teller-Morrow calls her son, Jackson "Jax" Teller, Jax is the Vice President of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original. Her husband, Clarence "Clay" Morrow, is the club President. She enquires if he has gone to storage to look for some stuff for his new baby that is due soon. Jax tells Gemma that he can't get hold of Wendy Case, his ex-wife and mother of his baby. Gemma says she will go and check in at Wendy's house.

Gemma heads to Wendy's house and is horrified to see that she has overdosed, and her water has broken.

Gemma furiously dries to Teller-Morrow, the club's coverup business. She tells them that Wendy has overdosed and is in hospital. Clay, Jax, Gemma, Robert "Bobby Elvis" Munson and Filip "Chibs" Telford head to Saint Thomas Hospital. Gemma explains that the heroin Wendy OD'd on had marking on the packaging, the club realise it is the work of the Nordics, a white supremacist gang in Charming who frequently peddle drugs.

They find Wendy and they quickly realise that her baby bump has gone. Dr. Tara Knowles exits the room and speaks to them. She explains that an emergency C-section had to be performed and that the baby is 10 weeks premature. He is also very unwell due to being born with the Teller heart defect and all the drugs Wendy was shooting up. He is given a 20% survival chance.

Jax leaves the hospital as Clay orders Chibs and Bobby to stay with him.

Jax returns to Wendy's house, which is actually his. Jax has been sleeping at the clubhouse since they separated. He finds Gemma furiously cleaning the house when Jax stops her, telling her there is no point in making the house liveable as Abel is going to die anyway. This earns him a slap around the face from Gemma. The pair sit and Gemma tells Jax that his late brother was born with the same heart defect, his father was hit by a truck and dragged across the highway, and he still lived a further two days. Teller's don't die easy. Jax scoffs and says that they do die bloody, however. Jax asks Gemma if John "JT" Teller ever spoke about his dream for the club when the pair first became involved. Gemma appears uncomfortable as she stands and busies herself, saying she doesn't know much about it. Jax explains he found some old writings/journaling (JT's Manuscript, "The Life and Death of Sam Crow") written by John and they seem to elude to the fact that the club was never meant to turn out how it has, an outlaw organization. Gemma has nothing else to say and leaves as Jax says he will lock up.

That night, Gemma tells Clay that she was cleaning up at Jax's house. The pair discuss Jax and Gemma tells Clay that Jax has found JT's Manuscript (not to be confused with the letters JT wrote to Maureen Ashby which play a pivotal role later on in the series), Clay mentions that Jax also wasn't keen on the idea of rebuilding the warehouse. Gemma tells Clay that he has to ensure Jax stays on the right path, follows the right father's footsteps. If he doesn't, it could ruin everything they have built.

The following day, Tara meets with Gemma. Tara explains that Able's surgery will be happening later today. Things get heated as they have some history, the two women have known each other for a long time as Tara and Jax used to be closely affiliated. Gemma insists as long as she take good care of Abel, she has no issue with her assisting.

Gemma Teller pays a visit to Wendy, who promises to go to rehab, she threatens her, saying that Abel is going to live, but she will have nothing to do with him, she is never to go near him. Gemma leaves Wendy with a bible, inside the pages she finds a needle.

"Seeds"[]

Gemma later approaches Tara and she says that Abel is doing better. Tara then says that she knows Gemma gave Wendy the needle to try and finish her off. Tara says that she will tell Jax her theory. Gemma chastises her, saying that isn't going to bring Jax back to her. Tara insists she has no interest in Jax and tells Gemma that she isn't untouchable.

Gemma later sees Donna Winston, Harry "Opie" Winston's wife unable to pay for her groceries, she foots the bill and heads outside to give them to Donna who is less than grateful. Gemma says that SAMCRO will always be there for Donna and she is family. Donna tells Gemma she doesn't need them and wants nothing to do with the club, insisting that Opie is out. Nevertheless, Gemma invites the Winston family to dinner with the Teller's that night, insisting that she comes. If Donna had indeed followed her instincts to separate herself from Samcro instead of listening to Gemma and going to the party would she still be alive? Donna says herself "Abel coming home is a big deal, our family should be there." so admittedly it is her own decision to go but thought provoking to think, basically every death and injury leads back to Gemma even Donna's accident is arguably Gemma's fault.

Gemma heads to Jax's room at the clubhouse, she finds more of JT's books, knowing that Jax has been reading them. She questions Jax on it, who downplays it. Gemma says that JT was a good writer. Jax leaves the room and Gemma begins to rife through his stuff, looking for more of JT's writings to take away. She becomes emotional when she finds a picture of her and JT's wedding day, with Clay standing just behind them, as JT's best man. Gemma later burns the picture.

"Fun Town"[]

The club are at a local carnival. They briefly cross paths with Elliott Oswald, a local business man with whom the club have some history with. His wife, Karen, is less than pleased to see Clay and the club, knowing they are bad news.

Later that night, Gemma is still at the carnival whilst the club have headed back to TM for a business meeting. Gemma finds the Oswalds frantically looking for Tristan, their young daughter who has gone missing at the carnival.

The club later learn that Tristen, Oswald's daughter was raped at the carnival and the club are looking for leads to track down the perpetrator. Knowing that the club are looking for Nordics as the prime suspect, Gemma calls Clay to tell him that Ernest Darby, leader of the Nords is at St. Thomas hospital.

Gemma hangs around outside and upon seeing Darby leaving, slows him down by engaging in some flirtatious conversation. Darby appears to have had desires to be with Gemma for quite some time, and are still on friendly terms, despite Gemma's Jewish background. Gemma kids him about his mother being treated by Jewish doctors as she sits with him at the hospital. Though he doesn't seem upset by this.

Gemma visits Wendy and taunts her a little further. As she leaves, she walks past Deputy Chief David Hale, who was attempting to speak to Tristen but was given a mouthful by Karen.

Gemma sits for a little while with Abel, reading to him. Jax soon arrives and he learns that Wendy is awake. Oswald soon arrives and Gemma goes back to be with Abel whilst Jax and Oswald talk. Oswald is disappointed to learn that they have not been able to track down the rapist yet. Jax says they need to speak with Tristen but Oswald is very against it. Jax sees that Gemma overheard their conversation and the pair have an idea.

Gemma sneaks in to Tristen's room and lies to her, saying that her and Karen are old friends, Gemma is able to extract some information from her. Gemma confronts Karen outside, claiming that Tristen remembers everything but Karen wants to sweep it under the rug. Gemma says she isn't judging her but it is wrong to make Tristen bury it. Gemma is able to convince Karen to see the error of her ways. She reports back to Jax with the truth, a carnival worker dressed in a clown costume raped Tristen. Jax heads out, passing by Hale in the process.

"Patch Over"[]

Gemma arrives at TM and learns that Clay is sending Jax and Bobby to Nevada for a few days on club business. She tells Clay that she is still concerned about Jax's recent behaviour but Clay assures her it is fine.

Gemma digs through Tara's bag which is left in her car, she finds her handgun and asks her about it. Tara attempts to brush it off but Gemma is too smart, Tara quickly ends the conversation and gets out of the car, claiming the gun is legal and she knows how to use it.

Gemma looks through her own stash of guns and picks out an unregistered one. She then calls Luann Delaney, a porn producer and friend of the club and asks if she still has a contact inside the police who can assist her in running a name through the database. The following morning, she heads to Tara's house and drops her car off. Tara quickly sees through Gemma's act as she begins to ask questions. Tara is warned by Gemma to stay away from Jax. Gemma leaves Tara with the unregistered firearm and exits.

On the way back, Gemma chats with Lowell Harland Jr. He is a mechanic at TM and a recovering drug addict, Lowell insists to Gemma that he is doing fine and is in a good place.

Gemma catches up with Luann who has been able to find out some more information about Tara. Namely that she filed a restraining order a few months ago.

Gemma and Luann setup for the Taste of Charming fundraiser event that Gemma has been running for years. April Hobart, who is assisting approaches Gemma and asks if her ex-husband, Kyle Hobart, an excommuniated SAMCRO member will be allowed to come to see his son play in his band. Gemma is incredibly sceptical, Kyle was kicked out of the club for allowing Opie to be arrested nearly 10 years ago which landed him a long stint in jail. Gemma says she will speak to Clay about it.

Clay returns to the garage and is approached by Gemma, she asks if Kyle will be allowed to come to the fundraiser tomorrow that she is hosting. Clay instantly tells her no, but after some sweet talking from Gemma he agrees to bring the vote to the table, but insists that it won't pass.

Gemma is selling SAMCRO chilli when Wayne Unser approaches her, the chief of Charming PD and long time associated of the club. Gemma inquires about a guy serving burgers at another stand and Unser explains that he is John Kohn, the ATF agent who has been sniffing around the club recently.

Later, Gemma has to tell April that she should make her way to the hospital as she will expect to find Kyle there after the club has finished dealing with him.

"AK-51"[]

A croweater turns up at the garage and Gemma believes Half-Sack knows who she is, she also becomes suspicious of Clay when he appears angry at the sight of her. Gemma collars Half-Sack and asks him if Clay slept with the young woman. Half-Sack denies this but Gemma isn't convinced. Gemma breaks down in tears.

GemmahitsCherry

As Gemma heads through town, she notices the same croweater, Cherry, from earlier. Without thinking, Gemma strikes the woman across the face with a skateboard. Gemma calmly sits on the pavement and waits to be arrested.

Gemma is bought in to the Charming station, Clay is baffled as to what Gemma could've possibly done and even more so when Hale tells him that he assaulted a woman, Clay stands and heads to the door and begins to yell at Gemma demanding to know what she's done. Gemma and Clay argue over Clay's infidelity as the two are separated.

Clay is eventually freed after the ATF raided the clubhouse and found nothing to formally charge the Sons with. He goes to see Gemma who is still being held in custody after refusing bail, saying that she needs some time to herself. Clay offers to stay at the clubhouse if it means Gemma will go home but she isn't interested. Clay apologises to Gemma for his actions and promises it won't happen again. Clay sits outside the cell, telling Gemma he won't go anywhere without her. Gemma sadly tells Clay she is going through menopause, meaning things are changing. Clay tells Gemma it won't change the love it has for her. Gemma once again tells Clay to leave, saying he can pick her up in the morning, to which he does.

The following day, Clay picks Gemma up from the station, they kiss and seem to forgive each other. Cherry soon arrives much to Clay's dismay but Gemma goes to speak to her. Cherry apologises and says she wants what Gemma and Clay have, only with Half-Sack. Cherry insists she is only there for him.

"Old Bones"[]

Gemma talks to Clay about the skeletons that have been found on i44. Clay assures Gemma that it will be fine, only Tig knows the truth that they aren't all Mayan bodies, as he had led the rest of the club to believe.

Gemma heads to Jax's house, in Abel's nursery she finds the place vandalised with photos of Jax stuck up on the wall and a puddle of piss on the floor. Jax is urgently summoned to his house by Gemma, he tells her it is the work of Josh Kohn, an ATF agent. He tells Gemma he will kill him.

Gemma speaks to Clay about Tara's recent influence over Jax. Clay assures her that he is keeping Jax close. Tig suddnely arrives and says that Lowell Harland Jr. has gone missing, finally finding out the truth about his dead father who was one of the bodies found on i44. Clay had always led him to believe that his father had just disappeared. Gemma tells Clay that he has always tried to help Lowell since he was a kid, nobody would be surprised if he never came back to Charming.

Back at his house, Gemma asks Jax what is really happening between him and Tara. Jax shrugs it off, claiming it is nothing, besides, it isn't Gemma's business. He didn't ask her to get so involved with him and Abel and doesn't expect her to.

Clay arrives home. He tells Gemma that Lowell is still alive, doing "SAMCRO rehab". He says that he told some of the truth to Lowell, but not all, Jax doesn't know the full story. The truth stays buried.

"The Pull"[]

Jax arrives at the hospital and apologises to Gemma for his outburst last night. Gemma talks about Tara again, saying that she hurt Jax a lot when she first left Charming all those years ago, and you never get over it. Jax then asks Gemma about speaking to Luann and getting her to front the Sons $70k.

As Luann arrives at the hospital for Abel getting out of the incubator. Gemma asks her if the Sons can borrow $70k cash. Luann is obviously unsure, saying it is a lot of money, Gemma tells Luann she knows she has a lot of money stashed away and to not get humble on her. Gemma reminds Luann that Otto is the reason she has the business today, she owes him and by extension the club. Luann says she will be able to get about $50k for the club, and she wants 20% interest from the club. Gemma flat out denies her request, saying she is greedy, Luann eventually settles on 5%.

At the hospital, Tara soon arrives holding Abel, she passes him to an emotional Jax and Gemma.

Back at the clubhouse Gemma returns to absolute chaos. There is an Irishman named Cameron Hayes bleeding out in the back of a stolen ambulance, robbed by Half-Sack and Chibs says that they need real medical tools or Cameron will die, the bullet hit an artery and it being lodged inside of him is the only thing stopping him from bleeding out. Gemma is relieved to see everyone in one piece; Clay informs her that other charters are coming down and the clubhouse needs to be stocked. The Sons are going to be going to war with the Mayans Motorcycle Club. Jax says that he will speak to Tara and see what medical equipment she can assist them in getting.

That night at the clubhouse, Gemma and Clay watch on as Tig and Opie prepare weapons for the inevitable war.

"Hell Followed"[]

At the clubhouse, Gemma is concerned as they haven't been able to locate Jax last night and today, Gemma wants to try and find him but Clay tells her to stay put. Piney and Opie agree to ride to St. Thomas to see if he may be there. Chibs then enters to inform Clay that he and Juice are still patching up Cameron, but Chibs is concerned he may have sepsis.

Unser arrives at the Sons' clubhouse and informs Clay he needs to bring him down to the station to ask him a few questions, someone made an attempted hit on Darby last night. Unser also says that he found two dead bodies that belonged to Mayans so he knows the Sons have something to do with it, Clay doesn't seem to be too interested in what Unser has to say but he is insistent. Clay walks Unser over to the meeting room in the clubhouse and swings open the door, inside Unser sees Juice and Chibs doing a makeshift operation on a bloody man. Unser is stunned as Clay tells him that the man is a friend and Juice and Chibs are trying to dig bullets out of the man that were meant for Clay; fired by Mayans. Meaning they went after him too so he had nothing to do with Darby. Clay admits that the Mayans were him but they are out of Charming. Unser says the bodies are probably going to bring ATF Agent June Stahl back and Clay must come down to the station with him.

Chibs and Juice continue to work on Cameron, eventually being able to pull one of the slugs from him causing a fountain of blood to spray out of the wound. Tig and Gemma rush in before the pair swiftly leave the clubhouse.

Tig and Gemma first try Tara's house and are able to find Jax there, realising that he stayed the night with Tara whilst the club were waiting on the medical supplies for Cameron angers both Tig and Gemma. Jax insists that the club will always be his priority before riding off with the supplies.

Tara soon arrives at the clubhouse, she immediately has Gemma feed Cameron some pills and then tells Juice she is going to plug the wound his finger is currently holding. Tara is able to stabilise the bleeding but admits to Gemma she is very out of her depth, Gemma says all she needs to worry about is keeping Cameron alive.

The following morning Tara has an early run in with Gemma who questions what she and Jax are really doing. Tara admits that she isn't sure and Gemma says that is what concerns her. Gemma seems to talk some harsh sense in to Tara as she tears up on Gemma telling her that she needs to be the smarter one and split with Jax before something bad happens.

"Better Half"[]

Now recovering under protection of SAMCRO, Cameron is hiding out in a cabin owned by the Sons in the mountains. Gemma arrives with some groceries for him. Clay calls Gemma and she assure him that Cameron is fine, Clay then says that Stahl is back in town and as a result, he is going to get Happy Lowman to come down from Nevada to smuggle Cameron out of the US.

Gemma shops and Cherry comes to find her, she tells Gemma that Stahl came looking for her for information about Half-Sack. Gemma assures her that it's nothing to worry about but Cherry admits that she hasn't been honest about her past, she is in fact married and on the run after leaving her abusive husband and burning down their condo, Cherry isn't even her real name, it's Rita. Gemma is taken aback but before she can say anything further, Stahl arrives at the supermarket, Cherry flees and punches one of Stahl's agents before being caught at the door.

Stahl approaches Gemma, with Gemma saying that Cherry doesn't know anything about the club. Stahl then says that she is sure that Luann does, this rattles Gemma, knowing her friend is in custody but she doesn't show it, saying Luann can teach Stahl how to give a blowjob, but that is it. Stahl says she knows Gemma has enough secrets to bury an empire, but Gemma insists she is just a wife and mother; she knows where to find her if she needs her.

"Capybara"[]

Clay receives a call from the SAMCRO lawyer, he announces that Luann is clear of any charges, but Otto isn't. In a final meeting with Stahl, he attacked her, smashing her face in to a table and breaking her nose, proving he is loyal to the club. The celebration is very short lived as suddenly Juice sees an army of armed police at the front door of the clubhouse, within seconds Stahl has strutted in as the club are forced to the floor. Bobby is grabbed and told he is under arrest for the murder of Hefner.

Gemma is visiting Abel at the hospital, Tara enters and tells Gemma that they will probably be able to take Abel home tomorrow. Tara tells Gemma that she doesn't think Jax is ready to be a father and Gemma agrees, saying that she will look after Abel. Gemma probes Tara with more questions about him and Jax but Tara isn't prepared to give any answers.

Gemma receives a vist from Mary Winston, Opie's mother and Piney's ex-wife. Mary tells Gemma that she has come down as she has been told to pick up her grandchildren from a federal facility in Stockton. Gemma is horrified to learn that the entire family is in the facility. Jax arrives and the pair quickly head outside to see what he has learned, he was also out trying to find Opie. Gemma quickly tells Jax what she has learned from Mary.

At St. Thomas, a horrified Gemma watches form afar as Tara allows a now sober Wendy to see Abel, she stares menacingly at Wendy and Jax as they chat inside of Abel's room with Tara watching from outside.

Jax later exits and finds Gemma waiting outside, sarcasticalyl remarking on their "family reunion". Gemma is furious that Jax allowed Wendy near Abel after she nearly killed him. Jax jumps to Wendy's defence, stating that she is clean and is moving in to a sober living home next week. Gemma surprisngly shows compassion and says that she might as well stay in Jax's house until she moves. Gemma inquires about Opie and Bobby and Jax says they have no new information, but the pair agree that Opie didn't rat on the club.

Wendy settles in to Jax's house when suddenly Gemma arrives. Wendy quickly rushes to defend herself, stating that Jax has allowed her to stay here. Gemma says that she knows and it is. The pair have a surprisngly pleasant conversation, with Gemma apologising for what she did to Wendy, stating that she was just very angry at the time. Wendy is even more shocked when Gemma says that she wants Wendy and Jax to stay together with Abel and be a family again. Gemma says she will do whatever she can to make it happen before kissing Wendy and leaving. Gemma knows that she has to try and keep Tara at bay and this is the best way to do it.

"The Sleep of Babies"[]

Gemma is decorating in preparation for Abel coming home today. Wendy arrives and confidently tells Gemma she knows that she is just trying to use her to cause tension between Tara and Jax. Gemma essentially admits to the accusation, but states that everyone still gets what they want in the end. Wendy says she doesn't want to interfere with other people's lives. Gemma reminds Wendy that she isn't a saint.

Gemma is in town shopping, she speaks to a homeless woman who is holding a sign saying that she needs money to bail her kids out. Gemma hands the woman some cash and tells her not to spend it on drugs. The woman spouts some religious ramblings which confuses Gemma slightly.

Gemma prepares to leave the hospital with Abel. Tara walks with her and tells her that using Gemma against her and Jax is a very insidious move. Geamm tells Tara she was just trying to help Wendy and encourage her to change. Jax and Wendy arrive and the family leave.

The house clears out and Wendy and Gemma are horrified to learn of the death of Donna in a drive-by shooting.

Jax returns home where he finds Wendy and Gemma, news of Donna's death has reached them and they are horrified also. Jax tells Gemma that she can go home, he needs to take care of his son.

Gemma and Clay are later seen comforting each other at home.

"The Revelator"[]

Clay and Gemma discuss the death of Donna, Gemma asks if it was Clay's doing and Gemma is devastated when he confirms it. Clay breaks down and sobs to Gemma as she tries to encourage him that they can still fix things. Clay dons his kutte and heads out.

At Jax's house, Wendy and Gemma talk about how her and Jax are getting on, Wendy admits that Jax has his doubts, Gemma says they all do. As Gemma digs through Jax's boxes, she finds JT's manuscript, immediately concerning her.

Gemma reads JT's manuscript, finally realising where all of Jax's insane ideas about the club have been coming from recently.

Jax returns to the clubhouse looking for Clay, he finds Gemma who can see he is shaken up, telling her that they have inforamtion about Donna and Clay need to speak to him as soon as possible. Upon Clay's return Gemma tells Clay that Jax knows the truth about Donna, she takes out JT's manuscript and shows Clay, saying this is how JT is brainwashing Jax from beyond the grave. Both are shaken up about what could happen if Jax finds out the truth about JT. Clay is enraged, telling Gemma that Jax already burned half the book and there is nothing for him to know about Donna, she is only concerned about herself and storms out.

The following day, the club ride with Donna's funeral procession to the graveyard. Many associates, friends and family are also present. Jax arrives late, looking worse for wear, Tara stands and places his kutte on him, before kissing him passionately. Jax briefly pays his respects to Donna before taking off.

Season 2[]

Machiavellithemommy15

Gemma is attacked and sexually assaulted early in season two by SAMCRO's rival AJ Weston and two unknown men wearing white masks. During the assault, Gemma is told to tell Clay that it would happen again if he does not end his dealings with minorities. Later, Gemma realizes that Weston was one of her attackers when she recognizes his tattoos. When Chief Unser finds her at the scene of the attack, Gemma demands that he cannot tell Clay or Jax about the attack, destroying Weston and Zobelle's plans to get Clay and/or Jax to do something rash. Unser complies and further covers up the source of Gemma's injuries by crashing her car into a road divider and taking her to the hospital. The only other person Gemma confides in about the rape is Tara Knowles, Jax's girlfriend. Unser later realizes that Chief Deputy Hale is starting to become more involved with Zobelle and his people, so he tells Hale about Gemma's assault. This causes Hale to re-evaluate his dealing with Zobelle. The attack leaves Gemma with significant emotional trauma, which causes problems in her marriage with Clay. She also feels somewhat paranoid that Weston would try to attack her again. Her paranoia is further compounded when someone from L.O.A.N. mails one of the rapist's white masks to her.

When Gemma learns of Jax's plans to become a "nomad," she tells him she knows about the book her first husband, Jax's father, John Teller, wrote. She tells Jax that she believes John's death may not have been an accident, but rather a suicide. After asking Jax to reconsider his decision, she implores him to read a certain page in John's book, hoping it will give him guidance and perhaps change his mind. The book fails to make Jax decide to stay and when the vote needed to allow him to leave is taken, it passes. Upon learning that Jax still plans to become a nomad, Gemma calls together her son, Tara, and Clay at her home and reveals the graphic details of her assault and gang rape. As a result, Jax picks up the jacket patches he had removed from his vest after the vote, indicating Jax has decided to stay with SAMCRO. The following morning, feeling unwanted by Clay, Gemma comes on to an emotionally wrecked Tig who reciprocates her advances but stops when he sees a picture of Clay. Later, Tig is guilt-ridden and proceeds to confess to Opie about Donna's murder. Then, outside the church that Unser goes to for his support group, Gemma is approached by the priest who runs the support group and offers her advice to serve others to deal with her own self-loathing.

Back at the garage, she runs into Chibs, who is distraught by his dealings with ATF agent Stahl. She comforts him and advises him to come clean with the club. After the club meeting, Tig tells Clay that Gemma thinks he does not want her anymore. Clay proceeds to the office and shows her that he still wants her. When the club goes on lockdown, Gemma looks after other families. She tells Tara that she does not have to take crap from anyone, because she is the old lady of the Vice President. Inspired by Gemma, Tara stands up to her supervisor at the hospital, assaulting her when she calls Gemma a whore.

In the second season finale, Gemma sees Polly Zobelle. Wanting to get revenge and also do her part for SAMCRO, she follows Polly to Edmond Hayes' house. She sends Tara home and sneaks onto the property where she finds a distraught Polly brandishing a gun. Polly attempts to shoot, prompting Gemma to kill her in self-defense. She then discovers Edmond Hayes' body and ATF Agent Stahl, saying that both of them had a bloody day. Stahl offers to let her leave, but not before tossing her sidearm to Gemma. She recognizes Stahl's trick to get her fingerprints on the murder weapon and flees. At a bus stop pay phone she calls Chief Unser for help. She is last seen fleeing Charming with Unser with no idea of where to go.

Season 3[]

Gemma was still on the run at the beginning of Season 3. She was being kept at a motel by Tig until Clay and SAMCRO can figure out a way to clear her name. Clay elected not to tell Gemma that Abel was kidnapped because he believes she already has enough to worry about. While at the motel, Gemma reads in a newspaper and learns about her mothers death, she tries to steal a car and is caught and saved by Tig and later she is able to convince Tig to help her sneak away. They end up at the house of her father, a reverend who is suffering from late stage Alzheimer's disease. After an incident involving Tig and the Guatemalan caretaker Amelia Dominguez, that resulted in Tig being shot, Gemma requested Tara's assistance. After the caretaker discovered that Gemma was wanted and that there was a hefty reward for her capture, Gemma tied her up in the basement of her father's home. Shortly after that Amelia escaped by overpowering Tara.

Geema in Belfast

Amelia then attempts to overpower Gemma but is accidentally killed in struggle with Gemma and Tara. Soon Gemma makes the hard decision to move her father into an assisted living home. Gemma then broke down, escaped in Tara's car, and contacted Agent Stahl. Tara informed the club that Gemma disappeared and Clay realized that she was heading home to be with Abel. However, upon returning home, Gemma discovered that Abel had been kidnapped. This aggravated her heart condition and she ended up in the hospital. Gemma had made a deal to turn herself in to Stahl upon her return to Charming in exchange for not receiving the death penalty for the murders of Edmond Hayes and Polly Zobelle. However, Stahl reneged on the deal, informing Gemma that because she did not turn herself in at the agreed upon time (because she was in the hospital), Gemma had violated the terms of the deal. Later, Jax secretly worked out a deal with Stahl where he would give Stahl information on the IRA and get her back in the good graces of the ATF in exchange for help with his mother (Stahl had been demoted off the IRA case following the events at the end of season 2). Stahl then supplied Jax with a statement for Gemma to give to the ATF, in which Gemma stated the real events of the Hayes and Zobelle shooting, except that Gemma fingered another ATF agent for the Edmund Hayes shooting. In "Widening Gyre", Gemma finds out that John Teller had an affair in Belfast in the late 1980s, which produced a daughter. She makes up her mind to go to Belfast with Clay and Jax and she employs Tara's help in breaking out of police custody. After a tense standoff with Wayne Unser, Gemma successfully makes it to the airport with SAMCRO. Once she and SAMCRO arrive in Belfast the Sons are in danger of being deported to America. Gemma forces a SAMBEL member to run the police off the road. After they release SAMCRO from police custody they head to the SAMBEL clubhouse, where Gemma meets Maureen and Trinity Ashby. Gemma and Maureen talk later and Maureen tells Gemma they should continue to keep the secret about John being Trinity's real father. Gemma may still tell Jax, because she may have noticed a connection between them. Gemma decided to tell Jax that Trinity was his sister after finding them in a compromising position.

The next day Gemma, Jax, and Opie go to the orphanage to get Abel. When they get there they under orders of Father Ashby, try to keep them from taking Abel home by lying about knowing where Abel is. Gemma sees right through this and takes a baby hostage and threatened to kill her. When they finally tell them where Abel is Gemma gives the baby back and Jax goes off to find him. When Jax comes back without Abel he tells his mother that neither he nor Abel belong there and Abel belongs with the other family. Gemma, enraged that Jax is willing to give up his own son, tells him that Tara is pregnant. When Father Ashby shows up it is revealed that Sean Casey was tortured and the priest tells them that Jimmy is now after Abel. Everyone including Gemma try to get to the hotel to save Abel only to find that they are too late. After a deal is made between Jimmy and the True IRA, Abel returns home with his true family. Once back in Charming the club is trying to find Tara and Gemma is struggling with the deal Jax made with Stahl. Gemma knows that it does not matter how much the rest of the club loves him, if they find out he ratted they will kill him without hesitation. Jax is still confident that nothing will go wrong and promises her that everything and everyone will be alright. Gemma, still afraid, decides to force Stahl to kill the deal at gun-point. Gemma tells Stahl if she didn't end the deal she would turn herself in and tell where the previous statement really came from. She later greets Tara and hugs her for her safe return from Salazar.

In the season 3 finale, Gemma is still worried about the deal Jax made with Stahl. When she sees that the deal is still on and that Jax is giving up the head of the IRA, she tries to turn herself, only to find out that it is too late because Stahl already gave her statement clearing her of the killings. Gemma warns Stahl that someone will get hurt. When Clay comes to see her in jail she tells him that they can't look at Jax the same way the saw John Teller, because club has been in desperate times. At the end she sees Jax arrive with Stahl. She watches with sadness as Stahl sets up Jax to die at the hands of his own club by exposing the deal they made. But Gemma gets some relief after Jax sends her a letter explaining that he was never a rat and that the deal was a trap the entire club was in on and the only reason they didn't tell her was to keep her from being an accessory if things didn't go as planned. At the end it is intensely hinted that Gemma and Clay are responsible for John Teller's death through a letter from Teller to his mistress Maureen Ashby.

Season 4[]

At the beginning of season four we see Gemma is continuing her duties as the Queen of SAMCRO. She is one of the first people, along with Tara, to welcome home the members of SAMCRO who had been in prison for fourteen months. She later visits Unser who has sold his business and moved into a trailer in the woods. After she and Clay have sex to properly welcome him home she tells him that Unser needs him and the club to go on living. Gemma later attends Opie's wedding. After the wedding she goes to Jax's house to check on the boys and she finds a note that suggest Maureen Ashby gave John Teller's letter to Jax to read. The next day she tells Clay about what she found and he tells her not to worry about it. Later she discovers that Jax hadn't read them, but Tara has. She tells Tara that the letters will only hurt their family. But more piles on when Piney tells her about wanting the club to mule drugs. When she confronts Clay and tries to order him not to do it, he makes her know that she is not the boss of him. When the club goes to Tucson for the drug run, she confronts Piney about his beef with Clay and tells him to let it go before he gets himself killed, but he won't back down. In the next episode Clay tells Gemma about the confrontation with Piney were Piney tells Clay he knows the truth about John Teller's death. She not only worries about the truth coming out, but also about Clay when he suggests killing Tara and Piney as they are they only other two people who know the truth. She talks him out of it. She later goes to Unser who she tells to get the letters as he too was involved in the murder of John by helping cover it up. Later she goes to get the letters and discovers that Unser burned them. She shows the ashes to Clay unaware that he read them.

Later in the Season Gemma discovers Piney's dead body and immediately knows it was Clay who killed him. She learns from Unser that Clay not only read the letters, but the ones he read were actually copies meaning Tara still has the originals. Unser wants to turn Clay in, but Gemma convinces him otherwise. Later she and Clay talk about the situation and she tells him that they will simply add Piney's death to their list of secrets and she will convince Tara to give her the letters. She makes Clay promise her that he will not hurt Tara.

Gemma after her beating

The next day Gemma sees Clay take money out of their safe and hours later someone tries to kidnap Tara. When Gemma confronts Clay they end up fighting leaving Gemma badly beaten. Afterwards Gemma realizes that Clay is beyond salvation and he has to die at the hand of the son. The next day she learns that Jax and Tara are planning to leave SAMCRO and Charming. She also discovers that Wendy has returned and wants to be apart of Abel's life and confronts her. When Unser tells Opie what happened to Piney in order to get Opie to kill Clay she tells him to try to stop it, because she wants Jax to do it. Unser was unable to stop it and Clay ends up shot by Opie, but he survived. Gemma then convinces Tara to give her the letters. Once she has them she takes out the ones that implicate her and Unser and gives the rest to Jax. She tells Jax everything that Clay has done and then tells Jax to kill Clay and take his place at the head of the table as the President of SAMCRO. While Jax is reading the letters, Gemma and Tara talk and Tara tells her that she knew about Gemma's plan to keep them in Charming. When Jax comes out after reading the letters Tara gives Jax a way to kill Clay and tells him that once it is done to come take her and their sons out of Charming, and he promises that he will. Gemma is forced to watch her plan to have Jax become the next president fall apart. When she asks what Tara is doing, Tara tells her everything Gemma taught her. Tara then tells Gemma that Jax is hers. The same day Gemma sees Jax in the hospital coming out of Clay's room and tries to beg him to stay and Jax tells her that he is not leaving and that Clay won't hurt her again. When she goes into the room she sees that Clay is still alive. Later, Gemma burns the letters that implicate her role in John's death and when the men are having church she sees Jax at the head of the table and Tara standing behind him.

Season 5[]

Gemma is now very independent from Clay as she is seen having sex with Nero Padilla in the very first scene, but it was later revealed that she had been consuming a great deal of alcohol and drugs, did not recall a thing from the previous night, tried to shoot Nero upon waking and had even given him a fake name, Rose (which was her mother's name.) Later they officially introduce each other and she gives him her phone number. Once she arrives at her home she catches Clay digging through her belongings, claiming to be looking for a ring, then he asks for a moment of Gemma's time and after hearing him out, he tries to touch her and she drops him to the floor warning that he will never lay a hand on her again. She later organizes for SAMCRO to stay at Nero's day spa while they hide from the law in order to stop them from being alone and unprotected in prison, much against Tara's wishes, despite both Gemma and Jax explaining that if they were to go to prison they would most likely be attacked, if not killed.

Trivia[]

  • Gemma is the second character, along with Jax Teller, to appear in every episode, although she only appeared as a corpse in the series finale. She also appeared in the Mayans MC pilot episode, Perro/Oc, which brings her total episode count to 93. This means that she currently has more episode appearances than any other character in the franchise, only rivaled by by Jax, who appeared in all 92 episodes of Sons of Anarchy, and Tig Trager, who appeared in 91 episodes of the original show and a single episode of the spinoff.
  • It is shown in the season finale, Papa's Goods, that Gemma's full name is Gemma Madoc Teller.
  • Gemma, Unser, Piney, Bobby, and Opie are the only main characters to appear as corpses in episodes after their deaths.
  • Gemma is the ninth main character to die in the series, being the last of three to die in Red Rose.
  • Gemma has one of the lowest direct kill counts of the main characters of the series, despite her duration in the series. However, she is responsible for many of the deaths in the show.
  • The only characters Gemma has killed directly were female.
  • Gemma is often referred to as the "queen" or "matriarch" of SAMCRO.
  • Katey Sagal is the wife of series creator Kurt Sutter. The two only shared one scene in the entire series, when Gemma visited Otto in prison after Otto learned of Bobby's affair with his wife Luanne.
  • Gemma is responsible for the direction SAMCRO has taken, leading to a lot of conflict and death in the show.
    • Gemma approves of Clay's plan to kill John Teller. After John is killed, Clay solidifies SAMCRO's connection to gun-running. Gemma has no qualms with her only son becoming a criminal.
    • Gemma learns of Jax's discovery of John Teller's manuscript. Fearing that the "ghost" of his dead father would change Jax, Gemma ordered Clay to push Jax harder and keep him close. This only created tension between Clay and Jax after Donna Winston's murder.
    • Gemma's cover-up of her rape by AJ Weston gives the League time to damage SAMCRO. Had Gemma revealed what had happened earlier, SAMCRO would have destroyed the League sooner.
    • Gemma followed Polly Zobelle to the home of Edmond Hayes, gunning her down in self-defense. ATF Agent June Stahl, who had been present in the home and had murdered Edmond, framed Gemma for the double-homicide.
      • Cameron Hayes, having overheard Stahl's radio broadcast, followed Half-Sack to Jax's home, where Tara had been heading to at Gemma's request. Hayes murders Half-Sack and kidnaps infant Abel Teller, setting in-motion the events of Season Three.
    • During SAMCRO's time in Ireland, Maureen Ashby planted John Teller's letters in Jax's bag. The letters contained the truth behind John Teller's death and why SAMCRO truly went criminal. Tara had discovered the letters and kept them a secret. Gemma found evidence of the letters and told Clay.
      • Because of this, Clay's paranoia and obsession with his end-game, Clay was willing to do whatever it took to find the letters and destroy them to prevent Jax from knowing the truth.
        • Clay murdered Piney Winston. Piney had been threatening Clay with the letters in order to get Clay to end business with the Galindo Cartel.
        • Clay paid Romeo to place a hit on Tara.
        • Clay brutally beat Gemma after she learned that Clay tried to have Tara killed.
      • Gemma had Wayne Unser cover up Piney's murder, but Piney's body was discovered by Opie Winston. Unser revealed a version of the truth, and placed the blame on Clay. Gemma had earlier told Wayne that Clay would die by the "hands of a Son".
        • Opie failed in his attempted assassination of Clay with Jax's intervention. Clay ordered Jax to lie about the attack and place blame on the Niners. Tig attempts to kill Laroy Wayne in retaliation, but accidentally kills gangster Damon Pope's daughter Veronica instead. Pope and the Niners then go to war with SAMCRO.
          • Because of this conflict, Pope orders Jax to have a member of SAMCRO killed. In prison, Jax, Opie, Chibs, and Tig were isolated and told to come up with a volunteer. Pope wanted Tig alive for now, and to prevent Jax or Chibs from being killed, Opie sacrificed himself.
    • Gemma's lack of responsibility after Jax showed mercy to Clay led Gemma to abuse drugs and party freely. While Gemma was recovering from this, she got high before babysitting Abel and Thomas. This results in a car accident, with Abel receiving minor wounds. This solidifies Tara's distrust of Gemma, and seeks to shut Gemma out of the lives of her children.
    • Believing that Tara had ratted on Jax, Gemma waited for her at Jax and Tara's house. When they were alone, Gemma brutally attacked Tara, attempting to drown her, and stabbing her in the back of the head with a carving fork, ending Tara's life in a bloody mess.
      • Eli Roosevelt, who had been tasked with escorting Tara, discovered the scene inside. Before he could report the murder, Eli was shot from behind by Juice. Juice, who was about to be excommunicated from SAMCRO and possibly killed, covered up the murder and went on the run.
      • Gemma placed the responsibility of Tara's murder on the Lin Triads, as the Triads and SAMCRO had been feuding.
        • Gemma identifies Triads member Chris Dun as one of the men who killed Tara. Jax had the Grim Bastards abduct him, taking him to the kitchen of Jax's home, where Tara had been murdered. Jax then tortured Chris, and ended his life by impaling him with a carving fork in the back of the head.
        • SAMCRO actively goes to war against the Lin Triads.
          • SAMCRO and the Indian Hills charter assault a Chinese exchange, killing everyone present. SAMCRO then steals the heroin the Chinese were transporting.
            • Jax, Chibs, and Bobby frame two Indian Hills associates as having committed the attack. The bodies were discovered by Indian Hills President Jury White, one of which was his son, Gibby.
              • Jax believed that Jury had ratted on the club after the Chinese retaliated against SAMCRO. Jury stated that he was not a rat, and went on to insult Jax, calling him the "poison" that was killing the Sons of Anarchy. Enraged, Jax punched Jury and shot him in the face.
                • Indian Hills then initiated an investigation onto Jax, questioning his leadership and the actions of SAMCRO.
          • Henry Lin discovers that the Sons of Anarchy were behind the assault on his exchange. The Triads retaliate by bombing SAMCRO's new clubhouse, and executing everyone present at Diosa, including Collette.
            • Jax and Chibs, with Nero's help, convince Henry that August Marks was behind the attack, and that SAMCRO was under his control. Lin takes Jax and Chibs with him to set a met with the Mayans and Niners to rebel against Marks, but it was revealed as a trap. Police Officers under Charlie Barosky's payroll pulled the Chinese over, Jax brutally beats Henry before more cops arrive on the scene, arresting the Triad members present for possession of heroin and illegal weapons.
            • SAMCRO assaults Triad members, and with Henry Lin imprisoned with no chance of getting out legally, the Lin Triads were disbanded.
          • August Marks had ordered Jax not to retaliate against whoever was responsible for the murder of Tara. August had sensitive business at risk by any gang violence, and that SAMCRO could not interfere.
            • Jax went behind August anyway, and started the war with the Chinese. After the assault on the Chinese exchange, August confronted Jax. Jax claimed that SAMCRO had nothing to do with it. August then warned Jax that he had no problem killing him or any of the other Sons.
            • SAMCRO began to plot against Marks, as Jax had predicted that they would have warred with August eventually. Jax secured Tyler and Niner's alliance, after SAMCRO eliminated a rebel group in the Niners. Jax also got the backing of Marcus Alvarez and the Mayans against August.
            • August retaliated against this treason by having Bobby Munson kidnapped by his head of security, Moses Cartwright. Moses tortured Bobby, first removing his right eye and delivering it to SAMCRO in a package along with a video of the torture.
              • Moses threatened Abel and Thomas, breaking into Gemma's home and writing a warning on the wall of the children's room. Gemma's pet African Crows were torn apart on Gemma's bed.
                • Jax relented, and had Tyler deliver a message that Jax would hand over his leverage against Marks, but would not allow Marks to kill Grant and his mother. Moses retaliated with another message, as the conditions were not negotiable, and delivered another package to SAMCRO, this time with Bobby's index fingers from his left hand, robbing Bobby of his ability to operate a motorcycle.
                  • Jax gave in to August's demands, and apologized to August for his actions against the Chinese and Marks. At the exchange, Jax handed over the leverage of Jonathan Haddam's body, video evidence of pedophilia, and Grant. Moses then brought out Bobby, who was gagged with a broken jaw. Alone, August pulled a gun from Bobby's waist, threatening Jax and Grant with what would happen to them if they ever betrayed August again. August then shot Bobby in the head, killing him instantly, and devastating Jax.
    • Ultimately, Gemma's lies lead to her own death at the end of Red Rose, after Abel exposes her hand in Tara's murder to Jax in the previous episode. She ends up getting killed by her own son with a single shot to the back of the head.
    • Gemma has a tendency to rummage through other people's belongings, often looking for information. She is so accustomed to doing this, she will even do so in plain view of the owner of the belongings whilst having a conversation with them.
