"Fun Town" is the third episode of the first season of the FX original series Sons of Anarchy, and the series' third episode overall.
Synopsis[]
When a daughter of a Charming family is assaulted during a carnival, SAMCRO seeks justice and races against authorities to capture the assailant.
Plot[]
SAMCRO visit Fun Town, the local carnival. Clay, Gemma, and Jax come across Elliott Oswald, a local businessman, his wife, Karen, and their 13-year-old daughter, Tristen. They briefly chat with them and Jax gives Tristen tickets for a ride. Later, Clay and Gemma have sex in a photo booth, and Jax, Tig, and Bobby rough up a clown at a dunking booth for insulting them.
Later that night, Michael McKeavey arrives in town with the latest True IRA weapons shipment from Ireland. Clay informs his longtime supplier that following the Mayans' destruction of their previous gun warehouse, there will be a delay in further deals between the Sons and the IRA until the new warehouse has been built, presumably after two or three months for the rebuilding process. McKeavy takes offense to this, reminding Clay that despite their friendship, their gun deals are more than just business for the IRA, and then says that without fronted payments or future deals, he will have to find a new buyer. After this, McKeavy and Chibs travel "up north" to find new buyers, likely the Russian Mafia.
Meanwhile, as the fair draws to a close, Elliot and Karen are seen looking for Tristen. She is later found in the nearby woods raped and beaten.
The following morning, Elliott approaches Clay and asks for help finding the perpetrator, offering him any amount of money. Clay refuses the money on the principle that this occurred in Charming but offers to find the perpetrator on the condition that Oswald carries out justice himself. The Sons then begin their own criminal investigation.
Elsewhere, Deputy Chief David Hale comes to a restaurant at his father's request, where Jacob Hale can be seen dining with Leo Kessler, a local businessman associated with Kessler Builders. They are both aware of Tristen's assault and suspect that Elliot contacted Clay in search of vigilante justice. Jacob and Leo say that Elliot is close to selling them and their fellow investors two land parcels (over 130 acres) off of County 17, and that they are concerned over Elliot's potential involvement with Clay and SAMCRO (especially because of the Club's opposition to expansion). They encourage Deputy Chief Hale to find and prosecute the rapist before SAMCRO.
At St. Thomas Hospital, Wendy regains consciousness after her overdose. Tara approaches her and suggests that Gemma supplied the drugs, but Wendy refuses to accept the allegation. Shortly after leaving Wendy's hospital room, Tara receives a call on her cell phone from a man in formal wear sitting at a desk with an American flag on it, who remarks that she is "a tough doctor to track down," to which Tara immediately hangs up the phone and has a concerned look on her face.
At Teller-Morrow Automotive, Clay, Jax, and Tig note that the police officers sent by Deputy Chief Hale to interview them about the night of Tristen's assault are taking another coffee break. Clay points out that Hale must be aware that they are also looking for the rapist and is trying to prevent them from doing so. Tig sneaks enough sleeping pills into the coffee pot for "about a twelve-hour nap," and the two officers pass out shortly after. Juice reports to Clay that after looking into members of the Nordics, three of the ones associated with Ernest Darby have previously done jail time for sex crimes. Tig and Bobby confirm that they saw one of these men, Johnny Yates, at the carnival. Meanwhile, Gemma calls Clay and asks if he is still looking for Darby, as she just saw him in a hallway of St. Thomas Hospital. Tig gives Juice the remainder of the sleeping pills that he previously used on the officers to stash. However, Juice mistakes these pills for speed and takes one.
Gemma sees that Darby is about to leave the hospital and distracts him by starting a conversation. He states that he is visiting his mom who is suffering from Stage Four Lung Cancer. They chat, and it is indicated that he had a prior romantic interest in her and possibly still does. Clay, Tig and Bobby then turn up and ask Darby about Yates' whereabouts. He says that he doesn't know where he is, and even if he did, he wouldn't turn him over to SAMCRO. Tig also teases Darby over the "mysterious disappearance" of Whistler. After more prompting, Darby eventually discloses that Yates used to stay with his mother on occasion, who raised fighting dogs near Pope.
Expecting heavy resistance or a possible set-up by Darby, they stop back by the Clubhouse to bring assault rifles. However, Juice can be seen passed out - due to the sleeping pill he took - in another room with the gun clips and ammunition. After knocking out the men outside of the rural home, they bust inside to discover that the men inside are in the middle of a Bible study for born-again Christians.
Gemma eventually gets to the truth when she speaks with Tristen and Karen Oswald at the hospital. It emerges that Tristen knew the identity of her attacker all along but has been keeping quiet on the advice of her mother. Karen comes clean and reveals that the rapist is a fairground worker. Gemma tells this to Jax and, shortly after, he and the crew force their way into the fairground. After a brawl with the carnies, during which Tig bites off a man's ear, they retrieve the suspect before the police can. They then take him to a secluded spot in the woods and present him to Elliot Oswald. Clay gives him a knife to castrate the suspect, but Elliot finds he cannot go through with it and flees. Undeterred, Clay picks up the knife and does it himself (wearing gloves). He then keeps the knife bearing Elliot's fingerprints and orders the others to let the castrated man bleed out, bury him in the woods, and mail the testicles to Elliot. Jax asks what Clay is doing, to which Clay replies "just taking out some real estate insurance." Clay then explains that he is using the evidence to blackmail Elliot into not selling his land around Charming to property developers. However, Jax is unhappy that Clay acted without consulting or informing him, the Vice President, of the direction that he is taking the Club. Clay further explains that if Elliot's land became commercial land, it would mean housing developments: "Population rises, brings more cops, more state and federal involvement. Charming goes Disney, and Sam Crow gets squeezed out by the most dangerous gang of all: old white money."
Elsewhere, we see that the man who called Tara, identified by another man as "Agent Kohn," has requested information about Charming, with the only flags being related to the Sons of Anarchy. As he looks through the files, he notices a mugshot of Jax before quickly flipping to an arrest record for Tara which lists that all three times, she was in the company of Jax.
Back in St. Thomas Hospital, Jax visits Wendy in her hospital room. He takes responsibility for everything that happened to Abel, admitting that he knew them getting back together wouldn't end well and that he disliked the fact that she was pregnant, so he bailed. He then takes her to see Abel for the first time, where she cries and apologizes for what she did. When she asks Jax what they do now, he replies that Abel will stay in the hospital until he gets better while she goes to rehab.
The next day, Hale finds Juice asleep outside the police station. Juice has a pacifier in his mouth, is naked except for an adult diaper, and has a cardboard sign stapled to his chest that reads "slightly retarded child, please adopt me." Hale wakes him up and tells him to leave. Meanwhile, at a mailbox right in front of the station, the mail collector eyes an unusually shaped package addressed to "ELLIOT OSWALD, 48 LIBERTY STREET, CHARMING CA 95200" containing the testicles of the rapist. A man then steps out of a taxi at the police station, identifying himself as Agent Kohn, ATF, and tells Hale that he is working on an interstate weapons case that might involve the Sons of Anarchy, much to Hale's delight, before they enter the station.

Notable Quotes[]
Elliot: I want you to find him. You bring him to me first. I'll pay anything you want.
Clay: Who do you think we are, Elliot?
Elliot: Oswald's have been in this town a lot longer than SAMCRO. I know what you are.
Clay: I don't want your money. Nobody comes into my town, and does this to an innocent girl. We'll find the sick bastard. But, when I deliver him to you, I'm gonna need to know that justice will be served.
Clay: You think a Son had something to do with that rape?
Hale: Half of 'em have violent crimes on their rap sheets. Just following logic.
Jax: Wasn't it just last week four Oakland cops were busted for prostitution and rape? Logic tells me we should ask where your dick was at last night.
Clay: And don't say "in your mama."
Hale: Officers Mann and Fain will be taking your statements. It could take hours.
Clay: I'm tryin' to run a business here.
Hale: We can do it here, at the station house - wherever you wanna do it. And don't say "in your mama."
John Teller: When we take action to avenge the ones we love personal justice collides with social and divine justice. We become judge, jury, and God. With that choice comes daunting responsibility. Some men cave under that weight. Others abuse the momentum. The true outlaw finds the balance between the passion in his heart and the reason in his mind. His solution is always an equal mix of might and right.
Church Meetings[]
Tig: We got a 200K deficit hanging over our heads. Do we really, really wanna be out there playing some pro bono Lone Ranger?
Jax: Guy raped a 13-year-old!
Bobby: 13. 13!
Tig: I get it. I just don't like putting my ass on the line for some outsider! Clay, Oswald doesn't give a shit about SAMCRO!
Clay: You know, people get jammed up in this town, they don't go to the cops. They come to us.
Chibs: That's right, us.
Clay: And that means something to me. I don't know. Maybe I got something to prove with this guy. You know, that's my shit. So, anybody wants to pass on this-
(Everyone disagrees)
Chibs: Oh, no way. I'm in!
(Everyone says they're in)
Tig: I'm in too. Guess we're hunting a tot banger then.
Clay: Good. So what do we know?
Jax: We saw a couple of guys sporting Aryan ink. Not sure if they were Darby's guys.
Clay: And Macon Woods is right on the Lodi border. Darby's got a meth shack couple of miles from there.
Bobby: Rape as retaliation.
Jax: Certainly in the Nord wheelhouse.
Clay: Tap into the Sanwa database. Find out which Nords get hard for underage pussy.
Juice: Got it.
Tig: Bobby and I will go after Darby.
